BEACH HIKE AROUND SOUTHWESTERN STATEN ISLAND TO CONFERENCE HOUSE PARK
Sponsored by the Rahway River Watershed Association. Led by Association President Kirk Barrett.

Hiking on the beach around the southwestern tip of Staten Island offers outstanding views across the Arthur Kill (the Rahway River's destination) and Raritan Bay. We will start about 3 miles to the east at the lighthouse on Prince’s Bay, one of many prime oyster beds back in the day (and hopefully in the future). The beach can be rocky and wet so wear appropriate footwear – not flipflops.
Around noon, after about 3 miles, we should reach our destination of Conference House park , which contains several historic houses, foremost the park's namesake, which is famously the site of the 1776 negotiations to end the American Revolutionary War. Our hike coincides with the annual reenactment of the conference, with Ben Franklin and John Adams expected to boat across the Kill from Perth Amboy to meet the British admiral, Lord Howe. Check out http://conferencehouse.org for background.
After you've had your fill of history, you can walk back along Hylan Blvd (2 miles) or the beach or take a cab or the bus ($2.75 in quarters or metro card) or we can arrange car shuttles. Bring lunch if you want to picnic in the pavilion over the water.
