I wrote this in 2000: "Hi. My Name Is Soda. And I'm a .wav addict. Hiiiiii, Soda. Any more of you out there? What I can't understand is this: why doesn't the FDA, or the FCC, or the Leisure Police, or whatever public watchdog group pertains here, DO something about the wanton and malicious construction of websites specifically designed to be .wav-delivery systems. This insidious and calculated campaign, being waged on an innocent and unsuspecting populace, MUST STOP! Now, I used to be just like you; I'd listen to the occasional background .wav when opening some new site or other, and just let it sit there in my temporary cache, never giving it a second listen, never taking it seriously, or even for a moment considering the lurking danger of saving it. Then, one night, while I pondered (weak and weary) over some arcane bit of web lore, a voice within impelled me to check out the Movie Sounds Page, or (I dunno, maybe it was) the Daily.wav... I swear, I only wanted to listen to one or two... You know the rest: At first I saved one particularly funny sound-byte to the file where my regular Win95 event sounds were stored. Then, next visit, another two or three. Then, I thought it'd be cool to have a regular little file just for my favorite 25 .wav's, to make it easier to get at them. Next thing you know, I was adding Sound Ring sites to my "favorites" list, and checking them weekly -- then daily, to see if they'd been updated. Soon my wife and kids were making snide comments about the way I'd come dashing out of my home office to get another Diet Coke out of the fridge, only to rush back upstairs to see if a very large file had finished loading yet. I can say it now: I was hooked. Now I've got over 300 megs of this crap clogging up my hard drive, and it seems that there are more sound sites than ever, springing up all over the web! And don't think that because you live in a nice neighborhood, you and your kids are insulated. I found out the hard way: I walked in on my son one night, and there he was, loading up on Cornholio and Foghorn Leghorn files, when he was supposed to be doing a term paper! That really was a wake-up call for me. I decided right there, no more .wavs! I was going to quit cold turkey, and turn my life around... So here I am, and I've been clean and soundless for three months now. It's an uphill battle, and it isn't being made any easier by those evil street-level .wav pushers. They hang out on the edges of otherwise-respectable sites, hoping to lure unsuspecting surfers into picking up a "freebie". They know, you'll be back... Anyhow, that's my story. I'm a recovering .wavie. And I think I'm finally in control of my addictive personality. Now, if I could just stop downloading those damned .jpg's and .gif's... But that's another Group..." -s.
Thank you, Jamie. That link brought back some painful memories..Wav's? I still got 'em. Here are two I would've considered as closing numbers back when I left MOL for a short while a long while ago......And yes, I've converted all of them to .mp3, but I'm a sentimental guy.-s
