I believe there’s a group of men knitters that might teach you how to neatly repair them yourself…perhaps Joan knows where they meet these days?

Learn to Knit, for a Great Cause

Feb 1, 2017 at 9:03am
Knitting: it's not a hobby, it's a post-apocalyptic survival skill! Have you ever really wanted to learn to knit? I am hosting a dessert party for you, as a fundraiser for the Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood. On Saturday March 4, veteran knitters and newbies will join me for an evening of fiber fun, in exchange for a donation to Achieve. Please pm me your email address if you'd like an invitation!

The program's been going for over a decade now, I believe. http://people.com/pets/australias-oldest-man-spends-free-time-knitting-tiny-sweaters-for-injured-penguins/ OK that is just too wicked cute. That is the best new thing in the world. I'm going to have to share this to my FB page because nobody will believe it!

I personally feel that the left handed knitting community is very underserved and a store that carried only left handed knitting patterns would do very well in town. In fact, if done right South Orange could become shining beacon, drawing in left handed knitters from all over the state.

Help giving away kniting books and magazines

Dec 5, 2015 at 10:44am
As I go through our things in readiness for packing for moving, I realize that I have a severe problem when it comes to knitting books and magazines: I just cannot throw them away. As a result, I have many items, all available for free, since I hate the idea of just tossing or recycling books and bags that a fellow knitter or needle crafter might enjoy.. Mags include Knitters, Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits, and various others. There are loads of books, too, on knitting, and I also have some general needlecraft and cross-stitch books, but not nearly as many of those as the knitting stuff. Most are from the late 2000s, into about 2012 or 2013, although there are some from the 1990s, too. (It's amazing how many mags you can accumulate in not too many years.)If you'd like them, they're yours, with just one small catch: I'd like you to take them all. I will separate knitting from other crafts, and put them in separate bags, but I really need entire bags to be taken. If you text me at 973 919 4541 and let me know what you want and when you can pick them up, I'll put them in bags on my front porch and give you my address (obviously).Thank you very much.

There are compression gloves for knitters, IIRC. That might work. Or even a simple ace bandage or elastic brace. I'm fairly certain they make them for wrists, although you need to be careful about size. Too loose and it won't help. Too tight and it will cut off circulation.

Cashmere Trauma Edited

You could try blocking it, the way knitters block finished pieces. Dampen it, then set it on a drying rack and push/pull it back to shape, using straight pins to hold it in place at the shoulders, waist, hem, etc. let it dry like that. You could also wash it in an appropriate wool wash before blocking it.

The Thanksgiving "tail" of Lacey-home for the holidays Edited

Nov 23, 2014 at 1:33pm
This is Lacey(formerly known as Daisy)! She was pulled out of the NYCACC shelter last Sunday, by my friend Kristine (and her accomplice Donna) Kristine is fostering Lacey, through the Mr. Mo Project. http://www.mrmoproject.com/ Kristine has taken on quite a project with this sweet old lady. Lacey is emaciated, her toenails were so long, she was having difficulty walking. Right now, she probably has an upper respiratory infection that she contracted in the pound (let's call a spade a spade, that place is not a "shelter") She is so thin that she needs to wear a sweater indoors (note: to knitters---she could use some more sweaters---if you would like to help, pm me and I will give you some measurements, and I can arrange getting them to Kristine) Kristine and I became friends through rescue in Mercer County---and although she has 2 dogs, 2 kids and a very kind and tolerant husband, they could use some help putting some weight on Lacey, and nursing her back to health. Here is what a representative from the Mr. Mo Project had to say about her : Lacey is terribly underweight and has severe dental disease and is currently fighting an upper respiratory infection, she is getting excellent care and love from her foster family. Lacey could use a couple of items to get started on her new journey. If you would like to help and do a little Christmas Shopping you can do so through her hhttp://tinyurl.com/o2u4psl If you can spare a little at this giving time of year, please spare something for Lacey. She is out of the pound, into a home and surrounded by love, wholesome food and a soft safe dry place to sleep. She has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Thank you! Calli

Does Anyone Knit Wool Scarves for Sale? Edited

Nov 21, 2013 at 1:34am
I also knit, but not on commission. Unfortunately most non-knitters don't really understand how much time goes into a handknit garment - not to mention the cost of materials. I'm asked frequently about selling handknit socks and while I politely decline, inside I laugh hysterically at the likely reaction if I were to quote a price that compensated for a) good sock yarn at $25-30/skein, and b) roughly 20 hours of my time. For the OP, etsy is probably a good bet. There are crafters whose objective is only covering the cost of materials and you can probably find one there who will produce something like what you're looking for. But be prepared for some sticker shock!

There is a very informal group of knitters on MOL that occasionally meet for "knit-ins" in the area. Perhaps she could join up with them sometime?
