Heard of Cohousing? Intrigued by Intentional Community?Imagine living in a neighborhood where… Aging in place is not isolated, it’s connected to supportive neighbors that really know you. The warmth of the community shines bright and improves your daily comfort. Your private home overlooks common outdoor spaces for gardening and leisure. A common house offers places to play, learn, work, study, and cook together. Design features promote unprompted interaction while respecting your solitude and privacy. Sustainability is fundamental to the site plan, the buildings, and the lifestyle. You and your neighbors helped create it, own it, and manage it completely.“Cohousing is community designed to foster connection. Physical spaces allowneighbors to easily interact with others just outside private homes. Common areasincluding kitchen, dining space and gardens bring people together. Collaborativedecision-making builds relationships.” Cohousing Association of the United States

Metamorphosis: A Virtual Piano Recital Experience, Free
Virtual via Zoom, 4 pm.
South Orange native and resident, Monica Johnson, will present a classical piano music performance.
After 25 years away from the piano and only 11 months of classical lessons at age 8, Monica got back to her musical roots all thanks to the pandemic, a little bit of faith and listening to her inner voice. Monica decided to turn to the piano to help her cope through one of the most tumultuous years ever and what transpired during the quarantine was absolutely miraculous. Through so much darkness, healing and light were found. She started to teach herself how to play again and in the process her music helped others to cope as well. Their encouragement led her to put on a virtual recital and allowed her to release her first surprise music album entitled, Metamorphosis. Sure to be a wonderful experience!

This week in SOMA Two Towns for All Ages

Brown Bag Day Event on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the DeHart Community Center, 120 Burnett Avenue, Maplewood.

The Brown Bag Day Initiative is a collaboration between ADAPT, local Municipal Alliance Committees, local pharmacists, and the local police department. It is a two hour event and refreshments are provided for all participants. In general, older adults are invited to bring any prescription and over-the-counter medications for a pharmacist to review with them as part of a FREE consultation where they can ask the pharmacists any questions related to their medication, health, or other relevant health and wellness matters. We request that the older adults “clean out” their medicine cabinets of their old, unused, outdated and meds and bring them to the event for disposal.

The primary goal is to educate local older adults on their overall health and wellness, proper medication use, medication misuse, the issues with prescription medication theft along with monitoring, securing, and disposing. An additional goal is to collect any old and/or unused medication and properly dispose of them at permanent collection sites through assistance from our local police departments. We also have the opportunity for local law enforcement officials to provide presentations on a relevant topic (i.e., safety, fraud awareness, etc.). A Maplewood Police Department representative will attend.

Maplewood Film Society Launches with Documentary on Dr. Fauci

The Maplewood Film Society will offer the first live area screening of the new documentary FAUCI on Sept. 25 at 7 pm. A panel discussion of the film will follow featuring Dr. Jane Aronson, Founder, Worldwide Orphans; Candice Davenport, Maplewood Health Officer and Educator; and Anna Markarova, Maplewood Public Health Nurse. The program will be held at The Woodland in downtown Maplewood.

Directed by Emmy-winning filmmakers John Hoffman and Janet Tobias with unprecedented access to Dr. Fauci, this film from National Geographic offers a revealing portrait of one of our most dedicated public servants.

With his signature blend of scientific acumen, candor and integrity, Dr. Anthony Fauci became America’s most unlikely cultural icon during the COVID-19 pandemic. A world-renowned infectious disease specialist and the longest-serving public health leader in Washington, D.C., he has valiantly overseen the U.S. response to 40 years’ worth of outbreaks, including HIV/AIDS, SARS and Ebola.

The documentary traces the most defining and challenging moments of this remarkable man’s life and career. Dr. Anthony Fauci first understood the power of medicine working at his parents’ pharmacy while growing up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Dr. Fauci took to clinical medicine during his internship and residency at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and arrived at the National Institutes of Health as a clinical fellow in 1968. In 1981, shortly after the first early scientific reports of a mysterious new disease that would eventually become known as HIV/AIDS, Dr. Fauci switched tracks from his very successful research into treatments for vasculitis and other autoimmune disorders to the new disease that had at first stricken the gay community, IV drug users and hemophiliacs, but would later expand its foothold within many populations here in the United States, and become endemic in many parts of the world. By 1984, Dr. Fauci had become the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a position that he still holds, but he insisted on maintaining both his lab and his medical practice, treating patients at the NIH Clinical Center, the world’s largest hospital devoted solely to research.

Utility Relief Is Available

Letters Mailed Out Today to Approximately 350,000 Households Eligible for Assistance;

DCA Urges Households that Receive a Letter to Immediately Apply for Help

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) today mailed out letters to

approximately 350,000 households with overdue electric and natural gas bills to notify them that they

are potentially eligible for assistance to pay their utility arrearages. The Department urges people who

receive a letter to act quickly and immediately apply for help since the assistance is available for a

limited time only.

“If you or a loved one receives a letter from the Department of Community Affairs about utility relief,

please understand that the letter is official and legitimate. Do not throw it away or toss it aside. We

encourage you to follow the instructions on the letter and apply as soon as you can for help with your

overdue electric and gas bills,” said Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, who serves as DCA Commissioner. “The

pandemic has been hard on so many people and forced families to choose between essential expenses

like housing, food, medicine, and utilities. If you weren’t able to pay one or more utility bills, assistance

is available to cover most, if not all, of what you owe.”

The letter contains a QR code that households can scan with their smartphone to access a State website

to apply for utility relief. The letter also includes a web address and toll-free phone number for those

households that don’t have a smartphone or internet.

Households will have one month from the time they receive the letter to complete the application form

and certify that a COVID-related hardship affected their ability to pay for electric and/or gas bills. If

found eligible, households will receive credits on their utility accounts.

Approximately $375 million in federal funding has been allocated for utility arrearages. Sixty percent of

the allocation is coming from legislation (S-3691) Governor Murphy signed into law on August 4, 2021.

The remainder is from Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding set aside

specifically for utility arrears.

For those households that are current on their utility bills, but are still in need of assistance, the LIHEAP

and New Jersey Universal Service Fund (USF) program application period opened on October 1, 2021.

New Jersey residents can apply online by visiting https://njdca-housing.dynamics365portals.us/en-

US/dcaid-services/. To find out if they’re eligible for this assistance, people can use the completely

anonymous online screening tool called DCAid by visiting nj.gov/dca/dcaid.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal program that helps households

at or below 60 percent of the state median income ($6,439 a month for a family of four) pay for energy

costs (electric, gas, deliverable fuels and those included in rent). The Universal Service Fund (USF)

program provides a monthly credit on electric and gas bills for households at or below 400 percent of

the federal poverty level ($8,833 a month for a family of four).
