Will We Go to War with North Korea This Weekend?

As US warships edge closer to North Korea, and North Korea promises a new surprise, most likely another nuclear test, Trump has threatened to prevent further nuclear development.  China today is urging that both sides lower their rhetoric to prevent war from breaking out, but misjudgments could happen.  In that case, if the US launches a strike, North Korea will likely destroy most of Seoul, South Korea, only a few miles away from the border, and things could really get out of control.  Risky situation:

NYT:  HONG KONG — China warned on Friday that tensions on the Korean Peninsula could spin out of control, as North Korea said it could test a nuclear weapon at any time, and an American naval group neared the peninsula in a show of resolve.  “The United States and South Korea and North Korea are engaging in tit for tat, with swords drawn and bows bent, and there have been storm clouds gathering,” China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, said in Beijing, according to Xinhua, the state news agency.  “We urge all sides to no longer engage in mutual provocation and threats, whether through words or deeds, and don’t push the situation to the point where it can’t be turned around and gets out of hand,” Mr. Wang said after meeting with his visiting French counterpart, Jean-Marc Ayrault, according to Xinhua.  “No matter who it is, if they let war break out on the peninsula, they must shoulder that historical culpability and pay the corresponding price for this,” Mr. Wang said.

War in Korea, whether nuclear or not, would be a cosmic horror for the people of South Korea, who have just spent the last 60 years dragging their country up by hard work from basically a flattened battlefield to a modern society where people can enjoy a decent modern life and contribute to world prosperity.

Keep in mind it's only 35 miles from the DMZ to Seoul, and only 200 or so to the tip of the peninsula.

If the US government is the instrument to start war there again, I will lose my last shreds of pride and patriotism.  US has been a noble experiment despite its flaws, but now seems way too eager to throw its ordnance around wherever.  weeping for them and for us.

Kim laughing and accusing Trump of military hysteria. Never thought anyone could be more militarily "hysterical" than Kim, until the Donald arrived on the scene.

Who needs the State Department with its diplomacy and policy crafting when we can just cut to the chase and drop some bombs.  Heck, Trump got a boost in his approvals with the Tomahawks and the Big Bomb dropped on Afghanistan.  Trump loves "his" military.  (Big bomb equals big erection.)  That'll show the wretched of the earth the American might of Trump's swagger:  the new king of the world.   zipper

Seriously.  Did anyone else find it tragic that President Xi, of China, had to explain to Trump the complexities of China's relationship with Korea.  You'd think Trump would know this stuff -- or at least some of it -- before sending in the warships.  Or at least Trump could have contacted those with knowledge of the region at the State Department.  Are they even still around?

America's decline is breathtaking.

North Korea showed their military hardware in their annual parade today, but did not set off another nuclear test, thus sidestepping the Trump warships and threats for the moment.  One less thing to worry about today.

Meantime we don't have ambassadors in China or S. Korea and no undersecretary for E.Asia

I think Jared ordered "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" on Netflix to get ready to give advice to The Donald.
