Why did CHS and Principal Aaron cancel the orientation for 8th Graders next week?

No idea other than it will be moved to the summer. I'm sure many families with summer plans won't be around to participate. Would like to know what happened indeed.

How do we know it was principal Aaron? I'd also like to know what happened. One would think they could include a reason why it's not happening. But it all goes back to their inability to effectively communicate. Hopefully the new super does what he claims he'd like to do, and improve communications.

My suspicion is that no-one sent out permission slips on time. This morning's e-mail from SOMS detailing the schedule had an attached form to complete if you DIDN'T want your child to attend. I was surprised if that was sufficient and I'm guessing that someone complained.

Complained about what??

Having an "I want to opt out" rather that "I give permission". I've never seen any trip, even to another school in the district, that didn't require a permission slip.

I get that, and maybe this was handled oddly. But if I had an issue with my child going, I'd merely sign the slip and opt out... I surely wouldn't think it necessary to push it to the extreme, get on my high horse and claim it's an issue for all others. Let alone to such an extent that the district felt it warranted to reschedule. How other parents care to react is their business. Rescheduling to the summer is just silly.

This program has never needed a permission slip before. I doubt that's the reason.

So far this year, every trip for either of my kids to CHS from SOMS has required a permission slip. I've thought it completely crazy, as my older daughter starts her day there anyway! On one occasion, my younger daughter was almost prevented from going to rehearse a Shakespeare play for a couple of hours because her epipen was out of date!!

I don't remember signing a permission slip for my 5 th grader to go to MMS for the day last week. Hm.

We got a phone call because they didn't have a permission slip for our 5th grader to visit SOMS

As a longtime member of committees, HSA's and PTA's I have to say that permission slips should be necessary for all students leaving the building and/or attending school sponsored events on school grounds. In light of many parents over the years having an issue with their child leaving the building unbeknownst to them, permission slips are the only way to accurately count those students who do have permission to attend these events by a parent/guardian.

Was this a 'during school hours' student trip? If so, would definitely need a permission slip.

(The 8th grade orientations I recall when my kids were in middle and high school were evening meetings that students attended with a parent and thus no permission slip needed. But that was a few years ago.)

Maybe I didn't sign a particular slip for the Tuscan/MMs trip because there is a blanket slip you sign at the beginning of the year for walking trips during the school year, and this was one of those. Failing that, my husband signed it, or I signed it and my mind is farther gone than I had realized

8th graders with IEPs had their "intro to CHS" trip 2 weeks ago...permission slips were required.

Those were the MMS 8th graders with IEPs. I'm told the transition program for the SOMS 8th graders (with IEPs) scheduled for Tuesday ( which I thought this cancellation referred to) is still on. Looking forward to seeing some of my former students ( who may not be aware that I've moved to the HS) on Tuesday -- as the program is held in the library.

I don't believe we have gotten anything cancelling the trip from SOMS & it was opt-out...

Last week I got an e-mail one morning with details of the trip from SOMS (with the opt out form attached) and then another in the afternoon cancelling it.

So the bottom line at this point is that no one knows why the trip was cancelled.

I hope when someone gets an actual answer, they would be kind enough to post it.

There are quite a few things that go on in this district that we never get answers to, and I'm sure this will be one of those things. If they intended for us to have an explanation, I'm sure they would have put it in the email. All of this after a big meeting about communication (or lack thereof) in the district. There is no one who is answerable to public concerns and questions in situations like this. The more I think about this, the more bothered I am. I think I'll respond to the email and just flat out ask the question.

Logistics

She emailed this response: "Simple logistics – nothing else. We look forward to hosting students throughout the

summer at Tuesdays at 10 – more info to follow –
and of course 9th graders get the day to themselves
the first day of school.
"We’re hoping to send Peer Leaders from CHS to both
middle schools this week in a version of what we
would have done this Tuesday."

Good to know.

What about the logistics prevented the trip? "Logistics" is not an adequate explanation.

Thanks Max. I refuse to support him. I had hoped the new MOL would prevent one of Strupp's many aliases from posting links hoping to increase traffic to his website.

I will hazard a few guesses: (a) seniors graduating next week and all out effort by guidance and teachers and admin to make sure every senior has credits, is passing each course now, all fines paid, all grad fees paid, etc; (b) we had a lot of admin time chewed up with removing 7 students for their behavior (gun, fights etc) -- that takes time with all the legal issues to resolve, police, etc, (c) we have final exams this week for the entire school, (d) there is construction in the school this summer so A, B and C wings closed, all instruction in D wing (Guidance is open) so allocation of space, who is in summer school, who is teaching, step-up vs credit recovery, (e) probably a bunch of other things as well.

Wow. OK. Sounds good Jude. Although I also fine the explanation of "logistics" a little lacking.

All of these except (b) were known ahead of time.

It seems like a case of poor planning to me.

Thanks to the MMS gun incident and the CHS fights, I would guess that for two weeks, anything the administration had planned to do was completely disrupted. I am inclined to cut them some slack.

Plus, back in the day, we didn't get any orientation. We just showed up at the high school when it was time to start 10th grade.
