Which candidates support a lawn blower ban?

When it comes to local politics, I am a one issue guy.  I will vote for anyone who supports a Maplewood style ban and I won't vote for anyone who opposes it.  Candidates, surrogates, please let me know if I have ay reason to show up to the polls next week or if I should just stay home and order more HEPA purifiers.

Thanks.

Has the issue even been on the radar for the Trustees and VP?

It ought to be.  Maplewood and Montclair have both passed bans.  Between the noise pollution, the particulate pollution and the emissions from the two stroke engines, banning these public nuisances should be a no brainer.

But Maplewood and Montclair allow them during "leaf season", so is that what should be considered?

Don't know about Montclair, but I can blow leaves to my heart's content in Maplewood.  I just can't do it off-hours (ok by me) or have a service do it for me during the summer.

It is probably a good place to start.

Does anyone know whether any of the candidates have a position on this, pro or con?

I am waiting for Dyson to come out with a quiet one.  Till then I am not using one.  oh oh

Well, I'm not sure you would have an answer. A couple of us wrote questions the other night and they were never answered.

That makes me want to vote even more. And if you are not showing up Klinker, I'm happy to join those millions who I'm told vote under other people's name!

Is there any resource to compare candidates votes on other issues?  I probably will end up voting but I have been traveling a lot this Spring and am woefully ignorant going in to this election.

There's only one independent candidate with the courage to run against the local political establishment's slate, Nureed Saeed. If you value having a diverse BOT (i.e. not exclusively older white people), she could use your support. Plenty of materials about her positions her facebook and website.

very interesting in SO you have an independent running.  Nureed Saeed.  May be in the June primary here good old Maplewood where the good old boy CRATS click have a stranglehold on running the town

I'll just write her in on primary day.   Just to stir things up.

It's much better than voting for any of the other 3 but I think Summersgill does have a chance

Either of you know what her position on leaf blowers might be?

Well, one thing to consider is your overall feeling of how things have been going. If you are happy with the new apartments growing right up from our sidewalks, pleased with the sale of our Town Hall , content with the closure of our shelter built with our donations and at peace with the fact that our animals are being sent to a converted garage in Livingston, which according to Linda Frese of the NJ Health Dept. is not in compliance and should not be licensed then vote in the folks that pushed this through.

If all or some of this offends you than give one or two of the new candidates a shot.

If you are still on the fence there is the popular theory that term limits are good.

I have been going to Town Hall meetings regularly for a couple of years. I tend to feel there is a bit of voting as a team on some issues, but if you want your own take on things, check out the video archives on the website.  I'm open minded about certain issues, still learning about some, and wildly vocal about others.

No surprise the ones I'm wildly vocal about have earned me a few adversaries but it goes with the territory.

Have fun researching and enjoy voting!

I live around the corner from the former animal shelter. How did the incumbents vote on that issue and does Saeed have a position on it?

I completely agree with you, Klinker. The leaf blowers have been going now for 3 -1/2 hours this morning. It's not only annoying, but as you have pointed out, it is detrimental to our health and the environment.

All of the BOT voted in favor of leasing the former shelter to the gym Run Jump Lift instead of People for Animals which offered a compromise. They were willing to run a low cost spay neuter clinic and in exchange for the use of the site, were going to do a 7 day hold on site for strays, transferring them to another no kill site for both South Orange and Maplewood. They would as well do Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return for feral cats in both towns. They are a non profit, and for those of us who like the man, one of Senator Cory Booker's top 3 charities.  The organization's Director, Jane Guillaume, had already agreed to be our TNVR sponsor and obtained permission from her board to make the offer. She waited patiently for the Request for Proposals during which time Bob Zuckerman of South Orange Village Center Alliance, brought in Run Jump Limp as a temporary resident for 6 months. The offer was posted in a paper to cover the legal requirement but Ms. Guillaume was never given the courtesy of a call despite her many appearance at Town Hall meetings and Health Department meetings.

Once in the site the owner brought all of his members to the final Town Hall meeting. The group SOMA for Animals had collected 600 signatures for PFA, the Patch ran a survey which came out in favor of PFA but RJL one. Odd that they had been granted the exception of temporary lease when I had asked a year before to us my 501 C3 to temporarily rent space to house our local feline strays. I have assisted in local hoarding rescues and emptied the former JAC shelter of all of the cats at no cost to the town. I was told no temporary use could be offered by Sheena Collum and agreed to by  Barry Lewis our Administrator.

I'll get permission to post Ms. Saeed's answer to one of the members of SOMA for Animals, who is an attorney working for Best Friends for Animals. Actually the group's endorsement is posted on Next Door.

I'm blowing leaves right now.  remotely. with my electric ion battery powered leaf blower drone app.  catch me if you can.

The name for a leaf blower during the summer months. cheese

@klinker  This was from a friend's post on Nextdoor.

The South Orange Board of Trustees Election takes place THIS TUESDDAY, MAY 9TH, and we have the opportunity to elect a VOICE FOR THE ANIMALS to the board.

Nureed Saeed was posed the following question:

What is your position on South Orange sending its lost and stray dogs (no plan for cats) to the Livingston Animal Shelter, despite that shelter not being in compliance with state law (as the Board acknowledges) and despite South Orange not putting a deadline on Livingston to remediate their shelter to bring it in compliance?

She responded as follows:

I absolutely believe in that whatever the solution we find that we need to keep the humane treatment of the animals as the number 1 priority. I do not agree with us sending animals to shelters that are not compliant with the law.
