Where are the posters?

I've been more active on MOL recently than I've been in a while, and I realize that we're missing a good chunk of people who used to post often.

Does anyone know where the following have gone to?

pippi

algebra2

marylago

lord_pabulum

mumstheword

buffalojoe (ok, she's been gone since like 2002, but she started some fun threads)

Probably Soma Lounge on Facebook.

lord pablum and Mary lago just posted, mumstheword moved, some changed names,

mumstheword just posted on The Uncaged Bird thread. I just responded to her, as she is a regular on that thread.

Buffalojoe moved and in those days you quit MOL when you moved.  algebra2 is on Soma Lounge or just Facebook under her real name. Same for pippi, I think.

Maybe it's me, but I miss having a wider variety of posters. And while I'm on Soma Lounge, I like the functionality of MOL much better. FB refuses to sort posts by most recent for me no matter how many times I choose that setting.

You've put your finger on the difference.  SOMA Lounge is good for initially informing other people about something, but after the first few comments it's difficult for any sort of discussion to be maintained.

and imho the anonymous people here actually are generally more polite than some of the people on FB using their real names.

SOMA Lounge usually discourages politics and long discussions. It did allow it during the elections. Many of us are also on Nextdoor but I find this the best forum for in depth conversations,a wide variety of topics and the most hilarious posts.

I feel like we almost need to have a come back, we miss you campaign.  Much like my favorite stores email me when I haven't been shopping.

I moved away (to WO) 2 years ago, but I still rely on MOL & a few local WO FB pages to connect online. Lotsa juicy stuff (political & not) goes on around there that nobody but locals seem to care about. I've considered desisting from posting MOL (the West Orange category is pretty much dead, you know) and basically just lurking, but I'm too rooted to the many wonders of MOL - unattainable elsewhere - to disappear entirely.

BTW: IMHO, the erudition and panache of MOL's longtime posters are generally head&shoulders above that of the vast majority of WO's FB posters...

-s.

I've been posting since the earliest version, definitely pre-9/11.  I'm gad that some on the earliest posts aren't easily discover-able.  oh oh

I think we have so many brilliant people on MOL. Even if I don't always agree I learn so much and get a different point of view. Love the variety and the subjects discussed.

Time for a face to face?  It has been a while since we had one.

As Steve McQueen said at the end of Papillion-

"I'm still here!"

Actually I'm being polite, -The full quote is "Hey you bastards, I'm still here!"

If DaveSchmidt goes to the FTF, I’ll go.

Ok, we are all preaching to the choir because we are all STILL HERE. Let's put our heads together and figure out how to get some of those other folks back over here. It is , as was said, almost impossible to follow any long winded conversations over there!

I think part of the problem is that almost everyone moving into town has a Facebook account and that's where they naturally congregate.

Plus in Facebook you can make your own subgroups, right, so if you get fed up with certain personalities you can create your own group and leave them out.  Here on MOL it's all or nothing (not counting blocking certain categories). There's no "ignore", "block" or "immolate" buttons for people who you don't care for.  jamie and dave have made it clear why they don't want to do that here and I get it.

I'm not part of Der Facebook (although I'm often tempted because lots of information is shared there which doesn't make it here) but I'm frankly happy keeping my social media interactions here and on NextDoor. It's more of a self-defense mechanism ... I'd get pulled in and find myself checking it all the time.  It's why I deleted my Twitter.

Do you want your avatar back?

I use both (probably too much), but I do get frustrated trying to find things in Facebook.  Much as we complain about the search function here, it exists and works somewhat.  I've never found any way to search Facebook (other than within a particular group there.)

Apparently a lot of people never returned to MOL after one of the platform changes that required password resets that didn't end up working very well and caused frustration.  I don't know the remedy for that.

Also, unfortunately, there are a few very vocal anti-MOLers who are active on FB and happy to badmouth MOL fairly frequently.

It's a bit quieter.... but I don't really miss the drama.

Im thinking most of the people who stopped posting just literally burnt out. Some people had ,100'000 posts or more.... serious addiction. All night arguing on MOL took it's toll.....

I have one of those MOL coffee mugs!

I came back MOL because, like so many others said, the interface on FB is horrible.  I'm also on twitter which I enjoy for learning about the latest views, but also not good for conversation.  I don't always have the most productive conversations here, but I keep trying because the interface is so perfect for that.

When I was first on MOL, soon after it started, I thought it would be around for ever and our kids would end up posting.  But, my 23 year old has zero interest in MOL, so maybe longer conversations have gone out of style (which means they can come back in style too).

I have an MOL toque.

I really miss the lighthearted stuff that used to run wild for days - VC was full of whimsical silliness at times - but I think some of the instigators of these just aren’t with us any more. Or their lives have changed radically, with other priorities.

I’m in touch with a few old MOLers who are well and busy; occasionally they post elsewhere if they’re in the area. What’s written above seems fairly universal: the MOL design feels more accepting of longer, in-depth and searchable conversations across many topics and categories.

And give up intruding on the Mets thread, Jim? Never. (Plus, like Mr. I, I’m not on Facebook.)

Galileo put it best: On MOL, I can always find rooms full of people a lot smarter and funnier than me. Good company.

Who remembers the Dante-esque "circles of MOL" poster and PhilC's cartoons?  Those were the days!

yes. There's a lot more wit here than on the FB.

Well, I liked the post but I’m not on FB so I’m only going on what’s been reported to me cheese

This might be our new tagline - "MOL - Land of Long Winded Conversations".  grin
