What's a good time to start shoveling?

I'm still waiting, since we now seem to be getting more sleet/rain, so rather not have that on the driveway/walkway when it's over.

Waiting till it is over. High winds will just blow some of what is cleared back, leaving any icy coating for the morning.

when is it supposed to be over (or mostly over)?

Apparently it remains to be seen. Max said there's a dry slot moving our way which could be the end of it or just a break with some more accumulation possible.

All estimates I have seen say by 5 or so.

I just took a peek outside my garage and it doesn't appear to be overwhelming. However, still snowing and blowing, so think I'm still going to wait until someone gives us a better idea of when it's going to end. Would like to only have to deal with it once.

After it stops ... supposedly mid/late afternoon.

The first person to finish shoveling might actually get a table at Arturo's.

Also, put down a lot of salt to deal with wind blown snow and the steep drop in temperature overnight.

Been out there twice already and will soon make a third go. It's very heavy and I would dread having to move it all at once.

when it is starting to get too deep to do in one shot...sometimes its easier to shovel within 4-6 inches, let the rest fall and shovel again

Started up again in maplewood after you posted. Projection is for snow showers on and off for the next several days.

Well that sucked. Figures the snowblower would decide to keep stalling out and I just remembered today that our other shovel broke a storm or two ago. long face

Person I hired (I'm getting too old for storms like this) just finished up. At least I can now get out the door tomorrow. Problem will be icing tomorrow on sidewalks, roadways, and driveways. Very little around here was/could be taken down to the black top.

My mother lives on a corner property. Across the street from her is a pre-school that hires a plowing company. Every snow fall they plow the snow from the entrance of the school's driveway onto the corner of my mother's property, making a HUGE mound of snow on the corner of the sidewalk that then has to be cut through for pedestrians. This isn't the normal pile that occurs on corners, it's added snow. This year my husband caught the guy in the act and made him move the mound of snow.

I started around 2:00pm and finished right before 5:00pm. Heavy, heavy snow made it slow going, but I got it done. So achy...

The added snow pile on many corners is from the town snow plow drivers working to clear snow from the street . The added pile blocking curb cuts and driveway aprons is to be expected. As I walk around town after a snow storm, alternating between street and sidewalk, I often wish we could effectively get DPW to clear the SIDEWALKS that get covered in these blocks of immovable ice deposited after the owner of the corner property has cleared snow from that area. If we are to have a walkable town, we need to treat our sidewalks with at least as much consideration as our roadways.

More to the point, when will it be time to STOP shoveling?
