The Rose Garden and White House happenings: Listening to voters’ concerns

It occurs to me that Casotto is the Eric Trump of our local Dumpster family.

I am new to this, but what do either of you even mean?

 Welcome!

Don't worry about being behind, if you read a couple of Cassoto's posts you will understand.  This racist jaunt he is on is new but he's never posted anything that couldn't have been posted by the dimmest bulb in the Trump box.

Thx, I read Casotto's posts now. He is the guy living on the right side of the train tracks who doesn't want the kids from the "other side" of the tracks to come over.

Excuse the previous post, I wanted to respond to his “adults” comment, but choked up.

I just wanted to find out more details about the purported plans to buy Greenland, and hoped this thread could reveal some...?

This news is everywhere:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/15/us/politics/trump-greenland.html

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/16/greenland-not-for-sale-trump-interest-in-purchasing

https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-eyes-a-new-real-estate-purchase-greenland-11565904223

The general response from Greenland and and Denmark is NO.

Greenlanders like their benefits. Even though they'd like to be independent of Denmark they are saying they will not do it if they have join a sh*thole country.

Whereas, Denmark is saying, we don't sell people.

Besides, where is the money coming from? Borrow more from China?  oh oh

Joanne, here is the Times report in brief

His interest in buying Greenland was first reported Thursday by The Wall Street Journal. Greenland, a self-governing country, is part of the kingdom of Denmark, where Mr. Trump is scheduled to visit in September to meet with the prime minister, Mette Frederiksen; Queen Margrethe II; and the leaders of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The White House declined to comment.

Mr. Trump is a former real estate developer who tends to view his presidency through the lens of acquisitions. But the territory appeals to him partly because of its national security value given its location, according to two of the people briefed on the discussions.

The massive blank space where your comment on this dumbassery should be is telling.

I expect Twitler will dump the idea like a wife with wrinkles when he finds out that 88% of the people living in Greenland are (gasp) brown.

Trump is playing "Risk" and is trying to box-in Canada.

It occurs to me that a game of Risk would be a great substitution for one of the Presidential debates.

My husband I celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary with a cruise, stopping in  Greenland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Newfoundland. The people we met seemed delighted to see ships at the pier. Most of the long, lonely winters seem to have been spent turning out wood and iron handcrafts and knitting piles and piles of hats, mittens and sweaters in anticipation of the thousands of tourists who visit their shores.

For gardening enthusiasts, the region has the most colorful street and yard displays i’ve ever seen. Cape May and Martha’s  Vineyard pale in comparison.

And, of course, the trip included  a visit to the home of “Anne of Green Gables” and her fields of flowers.

I have to thank the president for bringing Greenland back in mind! Excuse the off topic retrospect.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that Greenland actually IS a s-hole country (the Dumpster's phrase, not mine).

We are just noting that the Dumpster generally regards countries with majority brown populations as s-hole countries.

I apologize if that was unclear.

They are saying the US is.

I know people who arrive at Idlewild andT tking car service to Manhattan on the belt. Their thoughts, openly spoken to me, is shithole. They're opinionated and honest with me because I am who I am.

Its now "what happened, we looked up to you, we wanted to be you, the greatest country in the world, your culture, your economics, Coca Cola and so on."

Comparing their social and health services, rail services, roads, airports (infrastructure) to here is comparing day to night.

Looking at Germany. Germans consider their American car factories to be a third world labor source, cheap and not unionized. In Germany the average for German car factory labor is 67 US dollars per hour with many benefits. They also are represented on the factory management boards.

“The difference between Donald Trump and Greenland? Greenland is not for sale.”

Good morning, and welcome to my Saturday! cheese

I note in the BBC article:

'Greenland has said it is "not for sale" after President Donald Trump stated that he would like the US to buy the world's biggest island.'

Umm - WE'RE the world's the biggest island, and the smallest continent! Did he say 'Greenland', or use the phrase??? Oh, the article acknowledges we're biggest towards the end. OK.

But this is really bizarre thinking. Is he suddenly trying to show China that you, too, can have a Hong Kong-style relationship and do it better? In which case why doesn't he look after existing territories such as Puerto Rico??

Sigh. I'm just really really tired of grandstanding old white men leading countries, stroking their egos.

My brother just sent me a link to a 2016 article about Camp Century, an abandoned US military research base underground in Greenland. Apparently, back in the '60s everyone thought the depth of ice and snow would protect the surrounding area from the radioactive waste buried down there... Even in 2016 predictions were temperatures would render the waste unstable within a decade or so.

On top of which, the base is apparently an underground town. I can imagine Mr Trump's whirling with ideas, hearing that. And there are 'still missiles aimed at Moscow' down there, except they're prob not usable in any way.

But to someone who thinks you've got to beef up the military and appear tougher than your neighbours all the time, otherwise you're not 'great' or 'winning' - in fact you'll have to pay out to clean up your 60yrs of rotten mess- I can see why buying the place might seem appealing.

So much for banning assault weapons already here.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/09/opinion/ar15-assault-weapon-ban.html

Excerpt “Not only is confiscation politically untenable — the compliance rates of gun owners when bans are passed are laughably low. The distribution of these weapons across society makes even their prohibition nearly impossible. In 1996, Australia launched a mandatory gun buyback of 650,000 military-style weapons. While gun ownership per capita in the country declined by more than 20 percent, today Australians own more guns than they did before the buyback. New Zealand’s leaders, in the wake of the Christchurch massacre, launched a compulsory buyback effort for the tens of thousands of military-style weapons estimated to be in the country.

For context: In 2016 alone, more than one million military-style weapons were added to America’s existing civilian arsenal, according to industry estimates.”

That makes it sound as if everyone here has a secret stash of weaponry ‘just in case’, and we’re all itching for an excuse to show off...

It’s rare to meet anyone who owns firearms here, although you’re surrounded by loads of people who’ve been in the military or various emergency services where use of firearms would be needed. I’ve lived in localities with gunshops and pistol clubs, and worked on army bases in large country towns, and still only knew 3 actual owners of firearms, one being an Olympic sportsman.

If you go camping here, you’re more likely to take fishing tackle and perhaps a bush knife, a small axe. Few people need guns unless you’re going after ducks, wild deer or pigs, that kind of thing. We tend not to know hunters like that, we know they’re around but we don’t see them.

So please don’t quote those kinds of stats as if somehow it justifies what’s happening over there. We have very strict laws on ownership, and on use, and most of us still can’t get used to seeing ordinary police officers walking around with weapons.

This article, from around the time of the Christchurch massacre, has good local analysis for you:

He seems to love Socialist Countries.

Greenland - Wikipedia

The party system is dominated by the social-democratic Forward Party, and the democratic socialist Inuit Community Party, both of which broadly argue for greater independence from Denmark. While the 2009 election saw the unionist—and largely Danish—Democrat Party (two MPs) decline greatly, the 2013 election consolidated the power of the two main parties at the expense of the smaller groups, and saw the eco-socialist Inuit Party elected to the Parliament for the first time. The dominance of the Forward and Inuit Community parties began to wane after the snap 2014 elections, and 2018 elections

Maybe I'm sick of having just everything - bridges, airports, etc. - named after politicians. As if they're the only useful things we have.

Another interesting point from my earlier NYT link re assault weapons...

“America’s gun problem is far larger than military-style weapons, the mass killer’s rifle of choice. There are hundreds of millions of handguns in the country that take far, far more lives — both homicides and suicides. Given the quality of modern manufacturing, a great many of those guns will also be operational a century from now.”

Apparently, “built-in obsolescence“ is not a factor — as it is with cars, appliances, televisions, computers, and iPhones, etc.

I'm puzzled. These posts appear to say that you are unhappy with the state of affairs regarding the number of guns in our country.

Yet you've spent a lifetime voting for the party that has made this happen. Are you not happy with what your votes have bought?
