Website sounds - Aargh!

I've always been annoyed by websites that start up music (or other sounds) when you open them.  But lately, I find that websites open in my browser suddenly start making sounds after having been quiet ... and often I'm on another tab or in another program and can't even figure out where the sounds are coming from.   Why do they do this????   And how can I find out where the sound is coming from?  Sometimes I look at every single tab but don't see any sign of the offending ad or whatever.

I violently agree. Unsolicited music and video should be standard elements of things NOT to do.

I keep the sound turned off unless there's something (video) I actually want to hear.  Even then, the sound often stays off if captions are available.

Now, if sites just wouldn't delay loading while they load and play videos (ads) I don't want to see....

Make sure your browser has the automatic video play turned off (google how to do it for each browser).  Most browsers will do this however Hubby just inherited a Microsoft Surface and turns out the default "Edge" browser does not allow you to turn off automated play of all videos.

Thank you!  I use Chrome and googling led me to a browser add-in that is needed now that many sites are using HTML-5.  Hopefully this will work.

I DO turn off sound at times, but sometimes I want to hear the notifications, etc. and I shouldn't have to also put up with advertising noises to do that.

Thanks, wendyn!  I'll give it a shot.

What I really abhor are those horrifying ads that insert themselves right in the middle of what you're reading, mid-text, then smugly close again as if to say 'gotcha!'. People should be sacked for those bits of guerrilla coding - nasty for people with all kinds of print/vision/sensory/concentration issues or who just want peace and quiet.

Well, it didn't work.  More sounds cropping up.  LOL
