VOTE TOMORROW (Tuesday) Tea Party candidate running strong campaign against Democrats Mila Jasey and John McKeon

Due to redistricting, he is running a strong campaign.

Assume you are talking about Q?

If Mila Jasey had done much for our district schools over the years, perhaps she'd have less to worry about.

There is also another republican running, a guy from Chatham named Sellen. As someone described him in another thread, he's more of a 'chamber of commerce' kind of republican. I think I might vote for him.

Are there polls showing it is close?

Just asking. Voting dem all the way

No polls that I am aware of. But in the previous Assembly election 2 years ago, the first after redistricting changed the makeup of the district, the vote difference between the stronger Republican candidate and Mila Jasey was just 3.6% (roughly 4,000 votes out of 110,000), or about 286 votes per township. A strong campaign and strong get out the vote effort can make that kind of difference. Q Rim has strategically plastered the conservative western half of the district (Morris County and western Essex County) with flyers (e.g., his strong NRA endorsement) and canvassing geared towards getting conservative voters to show up and vote. Similarly, Mila Jasey and John McKeon have been focusing on the progressive eastern side of the district (Maplewood, South Orange, West Orange, and adjoining towns to our west) with progressive oriented flyers.

Significant money has flooded into the district, since it is considered more competitive than in the past. The latest ELEC financial reports, as of about 10 days ago, showed the following total general election expenditures for the incumbents and their (presumed) top challenger:

Rim: $148,653.19
McKeon: $ 96,106.49
Jasey: $ 79,458.27

Total receipts:

McKeon: $187,924.14
Rim: $146,806.88
Jasey: $132,785.19

The above does not include Republican Selen or either of the two libertarian candidates. (It's late, I don't have the time, and the ELEC server is now down.)

As far as I know, the above covers direct contributions made to the specific campaigns, but does not include PACS, political parties, and special interest group expenditures (e.g., NRA, Koch Brothers, unions, etc), but I'm not an expert on these things.

Per nj.com: "Experts say Tuesday's state Assembly elections may draw one of the lowest voter turnouts New Jersey has ever seen. In fact, a Rutgers-Eagleton poll released this past week showed three-quarters of New Jersey residents had no idea at all there was an election coming up.

Also from nj.com: "Candidates and their campaigns have spent $12 million so far. But outside groups have spent $8.6 million".

In the end, this election will be all about who shows up at the polls.

And the (multiple) postcards I got from the Q Rim campaign said NOTHING about the NRA, etc. I'm not sure they even mentioned the GOP. So they did some targeted mailing here also

Elections are always determined by the voters who show up at the polls. That is why it is so important to become as informed as possible about each of the candidates and then cast your vote for those candidates you consider to be the best available choice.

I have voted for Mila Jasey since she ran for SOMa Board of Education and John McKeon since he ran for state office. But I'm tempted not to this time.

I am a registered Democrat and in the last 2 days I've received 5 robocalls on their behalf. Furthermore, the calls don't register on caller ID - so I can't tell who is calling. I feel like I'm being hounded and harassed. I called their offices to tell them to take me off their lists - and you guessed it, no one answered the phone. You have to go through a maze of redirects to even leave a message.

It will be interesting to see if anyone calls me back. If I get a call back today I may vote for them. Otherwise, I will abstain.

The annoying thing is that the uninformed voter will remember someone name Q knocking at their door. I think they had a stronger door to door campaign in our area.

May I suggest that you not abstain?

If you don't vote, that helps "Q", the NRA guy. I certainly don't encourage people to support him.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is he the "NRA guy"?

"27th District Assembly Candidate Wonkyu "Q" Rim has been enthusiastically endorsed by the National Rifle Association with an "A" rating, and he states that he is proud of this endorsement. This information appears in an NRA flyer sent to voters in the western (conservative) areas of District 27"

Anybody proud of an "A" rating from the NRA will never get my vote.

For what it is worth, the alleged quote from Thomas Jefferson is deceptive. He wrote down a similar quote in his "commonplace book", where he copied texts that he had read. He did not write it as his position, and did not agree with the quote.

So, Mr. "Q" is relying on a falsehood.

Of note: the alleged Thomas Jefferson quote appearing in the postcard above is called "spurious" by the people at Monticello:

Nohero- Thanks. I'll give him a pass on the indirect Tea Party association but the NRA thing is OTT.

And, meanwhile, the postcards sent to us were very bland. I don't recall the details, but there was nothing about his positions. I'm not even sure it said he was a Republican.

I'm sorry, but this perspective really scares me. I totally understand how those tactics would be off-putting. But if you agree with their representation and their voting records, don't you want to keep them in office? Especially given the alternative.

I found the League of Women's Voter NJ District 27 information interesting. I would be concerned about candidates that chose not to respond. Okay maybe some that answered. Anyway, in their own words http:// lwvnj.org/images/voting/2015/dist27.pdf

Spending $150k-$200k to get elected to the NJ Assembly! Incredible!

Well, I've lived in this district for 30 years. I am a Democrat. I read the newspapers including the Star Ledger. I assume I agree with their voting records but I don't know their voting records. I don't know what their records are. All I know is that I occasionally see nice publicity photos of them. As far as their representation, I've never heard from them except those 5 robocalls I got in the last 2 days. So, it will be interesting to see if their offices call me back. I'll let you know.

I feel like I heard almost nothing from Jasey's office until it was time to get reelected. Then suddenly I was bombarded with all of her accomplishments. It came off as superficial. Just my opinion.

This is what Mila Jasey said with regard to SFRA:

"I supported the 2% Property Tax Cap and I continue
to seek ways to reduce
the property tax burden. I am advocating a $1000 p
roperty tax reduction for all families
earning less than $200,000. Additionally, I encour
age regionalization, shared services and
cost efficiency at the local level. Fully funding
the School Funding Formula (SFRA) for
every school district is one of the most effective
measures we can implement to reduce the
tax burden."

This is what Jeff Bennett said in the other thread:

"On top of the anti-reform vote on pensions, Jasey and McKeon have
also voted to prohibit outsourcing by public school districts and Jasey
has futilely spent political capital on urban education issues, like
putting a moratorium on charter schools. Jasey's defense of a blank
check for Interdistrict Choice, when her own constituents' aid had not
recovered from the 2010 and 2011 aid cuts, is also deeply troubling to
me.
I don't even know why Jasey and McKeon voted against SFRA."

I mean their representation regarding the actual governance of the state, not their representation of themselves.

Voting record here. Jasey has co-sponsored several bills of great importance to me, including the same-sex marriage bill and gun control measures. And no, I don't work for the campaign oh oh I just feel that she actually does represent me and my issues quite well, and am scared as heck of the opponent out there.

Curious what you would like to hear from them, and when? I've heard from her in response to emails I've sent regarding upcoming legislation, but other than that I don't really feel there's anything I'm supposed to hear... Touting their accomplishments at re-election time is what all politicians do, isn't it? That's what campaigning is.

I realize this may sound snarky but it's truly not intended to be. I'm very interested to know what you feel should be done differently.

It is a common complaint about politicians whether justified or not, so the smart ones send out occassional newsletters or hold Town Meetings. Some show up at ever public event until people get sick of seeing them.

Imagine every local Pol trying to get a shout-out at Maplewoodstock.

FWIW, I've sent Mila a few emails over the years, and I don't think any went unanswered.

ctrzaska said:

Yes, me too. That's kind of my confusion. Is the expectation that politicians need to reach out to each voter personally, all the time, and talk about their accomplishments? It's all public knowledge, so anyone can learn what their legislators are up to and what their voting records are. As a constitutent, I feel comfortable that I can find this information if/when I seek it, and at this point in their tenure I don't feel I need a personal communication from them to convince me they are representing my interests well

Any word on the results?
