Verizon Fios triple play

We have had fios for triple play for quite a few years now and feel that we are paying way more for their services than their offers for new customers... What is the trick for getting this price...do I threaten to quit or tell them what Comcast is offering and see if they match?

Exactly. Grab yourself a ubiquitous Comcast offer to refer to over the phone. Tell them you saw an offer for new Fios customers and you'd like that, otherwise you'll switch..

Be pleasant and matter-of-fact on the phone.

Threaten to switch. It usually works like a charm.

You have to speak to someone in retention. They can offer you the best deal.

I just recently talked to them and got hbo, showtime, 50/25 Internet, whole house dvr plus 2 other cable boxes, and the upgraded phone system for $148 after taxes. That saved me $40 per month while adding hbo and doubling my Internet. I was happy.

And when you get the new/reduced rate are you agreeing for a 2 or 3 year contract?

I actually had decent luck just asking if there was a better deal available when we renewed last year. The first time I renewed, I was calling about something else, and the rep actually volunteered that we could be paying less and getting more. Never had that happen before!

I just called and they offered me a little more service for the same price... but with a 2 year agreement... it is actually a higher bundle price and will go up after 2 years...so every 2 years you actually wind up paying more and more

Yes, you have to keep an eye on your bill for when your rate goes up.

Which same price? The $148 mentioned above?

no the same price I am paying currently it is close to $170 for a lot less than the $148

I actually got to retention accidentally. I called to update my credit card on file and their frustrating phone tree sent me to retention. I started to vent and next thing I knew she threw a deal at me. It was actually originally $158. I told her I'd think about it and call cablevision. she gave me her email. I never called cablevision bit I emailed her and told her i did and I needed a bigger discount. Over email she offered $148 for the first year and $158 for the second year. I told her to call me. On the phone I told her I wanted $148 for both years. She agreed. The end.

My Verizon bill just jumped $20 (apparently a "discount" expired); the "retention specialist" says there are no further discounts available now; and he maintains they told me this discount would expire after a year, even though it's a 2-year contract (they may have, but I don't recall). Basically, they offered nothing to keep me as a customer.

Cablevision's comparable plan ends up putting my bill back where it was with the Verizon discount, and Cablevision will compensate me for VZ's early termination fee. However, Cablevision charges $20 to install and $40 to transfer/keep my phone number. No contract.

So, any thoughts? Is it worth the hassle of switching? Is Cablevision's service (esp. Internet) as good as Verizon's? Is there something I'm not thinking of here?

Most of us seem to agree that Verizon's service (in the sense of signal, not repair necessarily) is the best. If possible, you want to try to use your quote from Cablevision as leverage to convince Verizon to offer you a better deal. (JMO)

I had luck with comcast bending over backwards to keep me as a customer. Verizon, not so much.

Last time around, Verizon gave us a $300 Visa gift card rather than a lower monthly bill. Maybe they can do something like that?

I'm tired of Verizon. I'm in the process of getting off the Verizon cell phones and as soon as my contract is up I'll move off FIOS in February.

The deals for a "new customer" are so much better than the deals for an "existing customer" that it makes sense to keep being someone's "new customer".

Brand new Fios customer . All installation fees waved , base internet 15/5 , phone , Ultimate HD. Red Zone , etc everything they offer . $157.33 for 2 yrs . Comcast was $229.00 for same.

Go on their site and mess with services. I tripled my Internet speed and knocked $10 off my monthly, with no commitment. It is almost like free phone upgrades after 2 years- they're happy to let you sit with the old one unless you go looking.

I wish we had more options up here in the woods. I got AT&T with DirecTV because the alternative, Charter Cable, has horrible reviews online. I suspect I made a big mistake. The pricing is awful, the service is worse. And the price is going to go up after three months, and again after the first year. Wow. What a giant rip-off telecom is.

I have Fios Triple play. When I saw my bill was higher then what I had been paying each month. I called Verizon and asked them about it. They said it was because I had a year of HBO at half price. I then said take off the HBO. Then Verizon said would keep the HBO if you could get for half price for another year? I yeas and my bill went right to what I had bend paying.

Not ALL of us agree. They recently TRIPLED our speed at no extra cost. I was paying for 30mb, was usually getting 32 or more, All of a sudden, they raised it to 101mb, but we actually get it even faster, regularly. All for the same price as before. Plus we get free WiFi all over town. I can connect up to 15 different devices. They have more than 100,00 WiFi hotspots now, run in conjunction with Comcast Xfinity, Time Warner Road Runner, Bright House Internet, and Cox Cable.

Wow, Meta, that's insanely fast. FIOS bumped me up to their 50/25 package, so this is what I get in the morning.


Thanks, all--I'm going to try to negotiate with Verizon again (maybe I'll get a more helpful rep this time), but am prepared to make the switch if I have to. Thanks especially @Metaphysician, for the internet info.
Does anyone know what you do with the Verizon power box (which is taking up closet space I could use)? How do you disconnect it? (not the router).

I WANT FIOS BACK, DAMMIT! (DirecTV and AT&T suck. SUCK.)

Remove the Verizon power box (any Verizon equipment for that matter) and bring it all to any The UPS Store. With you name, address of install and a phone number, it will be processed and returned to Verizon at no charge to you.
