Turning Uncomfortable Sofa Bed Into a Comfortable Bed archived

Is it possible to fix this problem with a foam topper? Anybody have one to recommend?
Thank you

Try an air mattress on top of the sofa bed mattress. That is what one of the stores we shopped in for a sofa bed recommended. Some of them actually come with air mattresses that you can pay extra for.

Or you can buy an air mattress with a stand and create a somewhat comfortable bed for when you need it as long as you have room to store the folded up frame when it's not in use.

Though this will be more expensive than a regular air mattress, I highly recommend this replacement mattress specifically for sofa beds. I have one and it couldn't be more comfortable.

Topper is not enough. It's a two-fold solution to remedy the same problem twice.
(I slept on a sofa bed for two years without either solution!)

1) Put something, like a sheet of plywood, under mattress to distribute weight and prevent feeling the bar
2) Put something, like an air mattress, on top of mattress to distribute weight and prevent feeling the bar

@cats, that looks great!

The air dream mattress does look great. Was hoping to spend less than $300 for a solution but that might not be possible.

We got a very thick memory foam topper and it worked pretty well. 3 or 4 inches I think

We installed a Murphy bed. Also not cheap, but solved two problems:
1) It's a real bed, so the comfort issue ends forever.
2) Allowed us to put the sofa where we wanted it instead of where it would fit with the bed open.

It is also easier to open and close.

We didn't know how uncomfortable our 20 yr.old sofabed had become over the years until friends from Arizona shipped an air mattress ahead of their annual visit! long face Unfortunately, it was a king, and our sofabed was a queen. Still, they were MUCH happier. Since then, we've purchased a self-inflating queen size air bed.

That said, KMK's solution is probably the best and least expensive; air mattress on top, a plywood sheet underneath.

Ok, thanks all. Maybe I should've mentioned, this is for a college student who will accompany my D home for Thanksgiving. I definitely want the bed to be comfortable but it's not like its for my 80 year old in laws. I'm thinking a foam topper will probably suffice for the now.
Thoughts?

If you can feel the bar through the mattress, you'll still feel it through the topper.

We went with the thick foam topper but the issue was the fact you could not close the bed with the foam in place So where to store the topper which is unwieldy and never to fit back into the box it came in!

Also the foam didn't solve the discomfort.

Question with the air mattress solution: after deflating it, can it remain in place with the bed closed? No need to store it?

I would bet a young person won't even care

+1 A young person (like I was once) will sleep through ANY discomfort.
Fresh sheets and the smell of coffee (and maybe bacon) in the AM and they will think they are in a 4 star hotel!

The Air Dream mattress stays in place. This is specifically for a sofa bed so, yes, it is stored in the sofa.

Our new sofa bed came with a memory foam mattress and it's super comfy. About $300 at Raymour and Flanagan.

I am still shopping this mattress and really not wanting to make another mistake. Is the the sofa bed mattress left on, under the air mattress?

Bump. Opinions, reviews, please.

Cats, I have spent too much time online looking for a solution , so, I plan to order this air dream mattress, choking a bit at the price though. If this is successful, it would certainly be worth it. I have already spent $$$$ on foam toppers that didn't work.

Has the one you have ever collapsed while in use? Is the sofa when closed as comfortable?

Have you looked at their video on their website? The bottom portion of the mattress is a traditional spring coil foundation. Then, attached to that is a heavy duty air mattress which comes with an electric pump and inflates super fast and you can inflate it as firm as needed. The entire unit, foundation and air mattress, is covered with padded quilting as well. I've never had it collapse while in use. I'm sure if you called the company directly, they can answer any questions you may have. I've spoken with them and they're very nice. They also sell the air bladder separately if you should ever need to replace that part due to a puncture/hole which may be unable to be repaired but it's made very well. The sofa itself is unaffected by the mattress since it's specifically made to collapse and store properly in your sofa bed. Call them...

Cats, sorry if I seem so needy on making this decision, but I have made bad moves on this sofa before and was needing some encouragement.

It's been ordered!

Thanks

Let us know how it works out.

Wonderfully! Had the first guests to use our sofa bed with the addition of the Air Dream mattress this weekend. The very guests who had previously slept on the original mattress and who hated it. They were very pleased and booked another visit for next month.

Best thing is not having to store toppers etc! Whole thing stays on when sofa is closed.

Glad you (your guests) were pleased!
