Things it took me too long to learn. Please add to the list.

Brussel sprouts are delicious.

Never buy cheap tools.

Scissors are cheap. You should have a pair in almost every room of the house. Similar situation with tape measures and screw drivers.

Le Creuset

Good knives don't have to be expensive, but they have to be good.

Christina Aguilera has an unbelievable voice.

Why do I speed? Where am I rushing to?

If I put something off, I'll never do it.

I should have paid much better attention in history and geography classes.

Okay. If this thread lives, I'm sure I'll think of more. If Soul69 writes "chirp, chirp," I'll know it's dead.

So how about yours?

sarahzm
My dad was right most of the time.

Patience

Possessions are nowhere near as important as the rest of the world would have you believe. Happiness has nothing to do with the "things" that you have.

PeggyC
What about Le Creuset? I think I agree, but I'm not sure without more information.

Don't let parental discouragement prevent you from following your dreams

Have children

Clean the litter boxes every night

"Why do I speed? Where am I rushing to?"

Good one and applies to more than just driving.

Le Creuset. Lasts a lifetime. Produces great food. Attractive. Soup. Stew. Etc.

I should almost never buy something on sale that I would not pay full price for.

Responding to my teens snarkiness with empathy works much better then responding with anger/annoyance.

I wouldn't be able to have the really great qualities in my partner, without some of the really annoying ones.

Letting things settle for a bit, rather then reacting, often allows for things to work out better.

(Have learned all of these things, but the practice is ongoing)

Agreed. I'll add mindfulness in general.

PeggyC
Ah, I do agree about Le Creuset.

Don't buy something cheap just to save money. You will have to replace it much too soon.

Only buy clothing if you really LOVE it. The fact that it's 50% off doesn't make it fit any better.

good one! I used to faint when I got shots, and one recently learned if you cross your ankles and press together it can keep you from fainting.

sarahzm
maybe trite, maybe corny - but Steven Covey's seven habits , particularly

Seek first to understand, then to be understood

if you flush a toilet and it is overflowing, lift the tank lid and hold the flapper down so it stops adding water to the bowl.

PeggyC
... or turn off the valve behind the tank. I needed that trick on Christmas Day. LOL

Dale Carnegie was brilliant. People will find you fascinating if you ask them about themselves. Corollary from my father: Everyone is fascinating.

PeggyC
Write down your parents' stories before they lose the ability to tell them to you.

steel
The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well.

swato
When angry or upset with someone THINK first before you speak, the words you choose can't be taken back.

I love this one.

-Not exactly a "lesson" but something I've been saying a lot lately:

"So much to forget, -so little time."

shoshannah
Know what the task of each stage of life is. Complete the task.

jeffl
Just because you're in the back seat of a car or taxi, you still must wear a seatbelt to be safe.

Always have two rolls of packing tape.

jeffl
Measure twice but pay a professional just once.

blianderson
Just let the in laws do whatever stupid thing with their grandchildren.

jeffl
Never buy a cheap sweatshirt. It's gonna look and feel like crap in a month and you won't want to wear it anymore.

joan crystal
Do something nice for someone every day.

Wendy
Spend time with the people you love now. Everything else can wait.

PeggyC
If you feel the urge to do something nice for someone, even if they are a stranger and might think it's weird, DO IT.

Avoid MOL

If you can't avoid MOL:

- Reread a post that motivates you to respond several times so you are sure you know what the person has actually written and what it is about the post that is triggering your urge to respond.

- Always preview what you have written BEFORE posting. Edit as often as needed to make sure you have made the point you intend to make in the tone you intend to set; and that your content, tone, and position are clear to the intended audience.

- Ask yourself if what you have written is really worth posting before clicking on "post comment."

Borrowed from Nora Ephron: Always have a dog when you live with teenagers so at least someone is always happy to see you when you come home.

This is why I have cats in addition to a husband.
