the weather

It is currently 70 degrees in Maplewood.  My neighbors are running their AC at full tilt.  That is all.

You must live in my neighborhood- mine are doing the same, although she is 8 months pregnant so I believe that they should do whatever is necessary to make her comfortable.

Due to the constantly shifting temperatures we have closed up all windows and turned on the A/C, then opened all windows and put in the window fans several times.  I'm just too cheap to run the A/C unless its 90+ and humid.

Count me as an all a/c man, all the time. From about May to October.

And speaking about weather, and not for nothing, but Saturday morning was the most disgustingly humid day I can ever remember. I played racquetball at the JCC, and even my damn shorts were soaking wet. I was slipping on the sweat that I was dripping on the floor.

blech.

I usually run my bedroom a/c as soon as it's too warm to have the windows closed. I have bad allergies and open windows make it much worse. I did have my windows open all day yesterday (I put a sheet over my bed). It was a beautiful day.

I have been pleasantly surprised that we haven't had the window units on as much this year as last, and PSEG seems to agree with my sense that it has been a more moderate year than 2016.

I try to go with ceiling fan and open windows for as long as I can but I'm not an extremist or masochist about it.   Last couple of days have been nice but July 4 weekend is synonymous with heat, humidity, and threat of thunder storms.   July 4 is the gateway to the mean part of the summer.   ACs will be on.

meh. Why do you care? I go AC a lot myself. I like to be cold. And I hate leaving windows open at night and being woken up by leaf blowers.

I'm environmentally friendly and don't use a/c.   I have an H-1 visa guy follow me around with a fan and a supply of cold beverages.  On cooler days just the cold beverages.  He is also handy when I’ve temporarily lost the remote.

we try not to use the AC very much.  But once we get the units in the windows, it really inhibits cross breezes.  And the wonderfully solid walls of our old house tend to hold the heat.  So on a night like last night our bedroom was still pretty warm even though it was cool outside.  And opening a window with the door shut and one window blocked with the AC doesn't do much to cool off the room.  By tonight though we probably won't need to put it on.

I hate a hint of humidity. AC all the way.

I grew up in Houston, Texas where central A/C is universal.  When I moved here, I wondered about living in a house without it and mentally put that on the list of home updates to be done.  30+ years later, I am a complete convert and we still do not have CAC and I LOVE sleeping with the windows open.  We have a whole house fan and window units, but it takes a lot to get me to turn the AC units on.  (Actually, it takes my spouse insisting.)  We are now considering putting in Central Air, but I will still prefer turning it off and opening the windows whenever possible.  I have loved the last few nights!

we have CAC-and love it.  we will and do open the windows every chance we get.  also have a whole house fan.  but bring the heat & humidity-CAC all the way.

I think that's exactly where I will be if/when we get the CAC.

With central air you can open the windows any time you want.  With units, not so much.   I have had both, and I much prefer the central air.

Luckily, we have two windows in each bedroom and three in the master bedroom.  We are able to open the windows containing the ac units a little bit (6-8"), so it works out OK for us.  I have no doubt that I will prefer the central air, but we've had a hard time justifying it given that the fan and windows are good most of the time and it is certainly a major cost item. What is driving us to it now is the notion that not having it will be a negative at eventual home sale time (where formerly it was more that having it was a "plus") and if I will eventually do something to the house for it to sell, I'd rather do it now so we can enjoy it in the meantime.

I would love to have my windows open but the constant dust from the leaf blowers means it's AC from the minute we turn the heat off. That's not even to mention the noise.

I really appreciate your view. Today many home owners adopt "green" recommendations blindly by replacing with energy star certified doors and windows. Why not rely on natural methods and cut down on utility bill? Refer this article for more such "green" measures for lower energy costs and carbon print (http://canglow.ca/how-do-energy-efficient-windows-work/). The low E glass coating, glazing, gas fills are few technologies that make energy star certified windows efficient.

@sac

Keeping windows open as far as possible and sticking to the natural air is in my view the best approach. These days all replace windows with energy efficient windows for long term savings and increased house value.

Try living next to the construction of the C section building.  Not that I like to complain with such "quality

stores " coming soon.

I do appreciate your skill at turning every thread to that subject.

Well I could have blamed climate change on the King's Folly building but I  thought that was a bit of a stretch.

Our house heats up quickly and holds humidity.  Also, it is one story so at night I am a bit wary about keeping windows open.  We have window fans in right now, and it's still at least 10 degrees hotter in here than it is outside.

The Village Coffee building is brick. The material holds heat and acts like a brick oven.  Without A/C life is pretty steamy in here.  My first summer here I gave it a shot using only fans.   There was not a second .

I guarantee it's not brick.

Now that is enough to drive a man to drink.  When I first moved in here my lease papers and such demanded of me everything short of my grandmother's maiden name. They would not have been able to pronounce it anyway.  I serviced this building 35 years ago.  Thought I knew every nook and cranny.  Just had breakfast downstairs and the owner assures me the basement is brick.  The coffee/dining area appears to be.

Maybe I will move into the Circus building and look down on Village Coffee.
