The pub formerly known as O'Reilly's

Any news on when it will open? And what is it called? The new storefront looks great but I can't remember the name.

 Pickett's Village Bar

I believe I read that it is doing a soft opening (perhaps private) currently and will open to the public in early May.

I heard May 3rd, according to the Village Green, but those kind of deadlines have been missed before.

please sweet Jesus tell me this place will be good.

When I drove by the other night it looked open but not sure.

I think they're doing some friend/family events leading up to the official opening.

I believe one of the owners and the chef is Rich Krug. He has cooked great meals at Orange Lawn Tennis Club and Lorena's. I will certainly be going there.

Will also have an outdoor patio looking over the golf course and country club. From Village Green:

"The new bar and restaurant, headlined by chef Richard Krug, will be in friends-and-family-only previews in late April, with plans to open May 3. The former O’Reilly’s has been fully renovated, with a state-of-the-art kitchen and of-the-moment-yet-classic decor.

Krug, a CIA graduate, made his reputation at establishments from New York’s Oyster Bar to Lorena’s in Maplewood and Restaurant K at Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange.

Pickett’s was in the works last summer when Jim Pickett suddenly passed away at the age of 53. His wife Heidi and friends have carried on to realize Jim’s dream."

They also have some pics on Instagram.

I hope they have a lot of success. Jim was a great guy.

I hear they're going to offer their own credit card.

It will be called Pickett's Charge.

Hopefully they won't have $18 hamburgers and $13 glasses of wine.

Looking forward to trying it. I would think the location is suboptimal with no real foot traffic, but if a place is good, people will come.

If it's good, I'll make sure I go often, but I am a little particular.

I heard it’s a $16 hamburger. I cannot wait to try it out.  The chef was terrific when he was at Orange Lawn Tennis Club.

We live within 'nearly walking distance'.  Went to O'Reilleys a few times 8-12 years ago, but the food was so mediocre (or worse), that we couldn't stomach it any more.

hope that the new team has a winner.

I wasn't a regular at O'Reilly's but every time I went in, it looked like they were doing a pretty decent business.  So I don't think the location will be a drawback if it's good.

I would say you should remember that O'Reilly's was there for a long time, and was something of a unique offering in the area. There aren't that many places left where you can go for a casual meal and drink. If it has to establish a new clientele the location may be a drawback.

Most of the people that patronized O'Reilly's didn't go there for the food...it was a pub.

I’d say that’s a fair assessment!   Except for the wings...

wasn't that the place with the popcorn machine?

Yes. And a Spyro Gyra cover band every Friday.

I was there for MOL F2Fs about 11 years ago. I don't think I've been back since.

I have to admit the wings were a reason I found the place off-putting.  Any bar that has a strong smell of buffalo sauce all the time is kind of unpleasant to me.

On the other hand, there's plenty of parking, and plenty of neighbors like me who live a short walk away.

I live around the corner, so I'm really looking forward to the new place opening (as long as the burgers aren't $18!  smile )

I liked O'Reilly's. It was completely unassuming, but not weird like Liberty Tavern, and I knew most of the staff by name. When they had that trivia game on their screens, I was in there all the time.

O’Reiily’s made a passable Impossible Burger.  Although unintended as such, I imagine.

I think "pub" implies a certain ambiance.  IMHO, O'Reilly's was a standard bar that also served some food.

Well, they did think of themselves as a pub, I guess.
