This thread will either be a big nuthin'.

 Resign?

I think it's possible he'll declare a national emergency to build his wall. He can't stand the idea that he might lose.

At one point I thought he might resign in frustration but now I don't believe it. I think he'll go to any ends he can to preserve himself.

I don't think he will do it. I'm leaning more towards him trying to rally the Republicans,  reality is finally sinking into his brain that he doesn't have the support for a state of emergency.

Just another round of him playing the accordion and campaign rhetoric.

I don't think he cares about support. He cares that by declaring a National Emergency he can make an even bigger stink than he has with shutting down the government,.

What national emergency?  Are you referring to the closure of Papa John's on SA?

what’s with that squinting?

certainly not being received well internationally: both the performance and the content have been critiqued poorly and analysed as weak and unfortunate, with the Reply being seen as firmer and more measured.

Trump is making noises about declaring a National Emergency again.

he will do anything to get his way. I personally would like him to keep going with this. Even try declaring a national emergency. I feel the camel’s back breaking and us reaching a point where even his party finally breaks with him. He is losing fans, he is losing future votes. While I feel terrible for the people out of work, maybe this is a good step towards us getting out of this larger nightmare.

the longer this goes on, the more asinine the saying "government IS the problem" looks.  People start to get a sense of what the government really does when it stops doing it.

The FDA has stopped inspecting our food supply.

Yay.

Yay.

Really? It's stopped inspections and checks? Cripes! Does that means hazard notices and recalls, safety notices etc won't be issued?  tongue rolleye

fantastic. And I’m sure the TSA lines will be bad. Can you even imagine being made to work a job like that for no friggin’ pay? Disgusting. I’ll be sure to thank them on my flight next week.

--- and when the next food poisoning outbreak, outbreaks, there will be no one to trace its origins.

can I ask about the CDC? Are they a separate and fully funded authority? I can't remember what I've read, and find the notes quickly.

I flew out of EWR Sunday night, and Dulles last night. The TSA agents were professional and courteous and seemed to be fully staffed. And yeah, I said thank you to each one I encountered. It felt kind of lame but I genuinely appreciate what they're doing.

They are far better people than I would be. I hope they get their back pay at least

Well, it depends on which "real" you sign on too.

Ah, sarcasm has never been my strong suit

Mr Yahooyahoo NOT being sarcastic would give me cause to worry.

we have to hand it to Trump in one sense.  I don't know how many of us, if any, knew how broadly the legislation was written to give the POTUS authority to declare a national emergency.  There were nearly 60 declared national emergencies since the 70s, and about half of them remain in place.  But a lot of them are aimed at imposing sanctions on other countries for terrorism.  We tended not to notice or care if a president declared an emergency and slapped a penalty on "Persons Engaging in Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities" for example.

But now Trump is showing us all that the legislation essentially allows a chief executive to declare an emergency at whim.  When previous presidents declared an emergency there was ostensibly something real to which they were responding (although it could still easily be argued that all presidents since Carter have abused this power).  But now we have Trump threatening to declare an emergency based on a phantom "crisis" that truly doesn't exist.  In fact the actual data shows that attempted breaches of the southern border are at a decades-long LOW.  The reality is the 180 degree opposite of a crisis. It's actually a circumstance which is being improved.

There is a lot of doubt over whether or not there is any legal means to stop Trump or any subsequent president, under the law as it exists, from declaring a state of emergency over absolutely anything they please.  Perhaps someone with standing can bring suit over the constitutionality of the law itself -- can Congress really delegate legislative power to the executive through their own legislation?  But given the makeup of the current SCOTUS and several of its members' support for broad executive power, who knows how the court would rule on that question.

Leave it to Trump to make it clear to us all that our governmental institutions, post WWII have incrementally given way more unfettered power to the POTUS than the Constitution ever intended.  Maybe his personal horribleness will spur the people to demand that Congress and the Court take some of those powers back.  Unfortunately though, I'm not sure that will happen.  An awful lot of Americans seem to want to have an all-powerful executive.  I hope I'm wrong and this imbalance is ultimately remedied.  I'm just not that optimistic.

I am so looking forward to the time when a Democratic President can declare gun violence a national emergency and redirect funds to research into gun deaths and impose stricter gun control laws. That'd be awesome! Oh and how about global warming! Better days are yet to come!
