Pope Francis, Catholics, and Christians in the news & Bible verses

Adorable and she is so right.

I had so much trouble posting that video. I thought it appropriate here as it is about "Vegetarianism" - a sect I wish I could join!

No one has ever alleged that the Church is a constitutional democracy.

More evidence that Pope Francis is bringing Christ's message of love back to the Catholic Church.

NY Times: As Church Shifts, a Cardinal Welcomes Gays; They Embrace a ‘Miracle’

beat me to it, Klinker, in spreading the good news. smile

The archbishop just maybe America's Francis.

there are several undercurrents in this massive story, none of them do Pell much credit and sadly, several conspiracy theories run right up to several versions of federal government (regardless of who's Prime Minister).

The history of this saga involves parishes in and around Ballarat, Melbourne and Sydney; over decades; and involves Pell personally as well as being a person in authority. As no-one yet knows what the charges actually are, we can't say to what he's answering. It's enough to say many people are highly sceptical that he'll 'be well enough' to come back for trial (giving grounds to claim further bias whether in media or mishandling of evidence).

FWIW, the few times I've been to a public function where he's been present (please note I didn't know anything about him then), I felt he was quite cold.

I'm not sure if you can watch this analysis on your computers, if it won't play you can read other articles selecting on the side.

It will be interesting to see how the Pope handles all of this. Surely there are ecclesiastical charges that should apply as well.  Does the Vatican have a jail?

Now I am reading in the Times that Francis attempted to establish ecclesiastical courts to try clerical rapists when he became Pope but was blocked principally by two Cardinals.  One, Pell was put on leave yesterday to deal with the sexual assault charges in his home country.  The other, Cardinal Mueller, was relieved of his duties at the Vatican today and replaced by his subordinate.

Pell's downfall has made the other defenders of clerical rapists vulnerable and the Pope appears to me moving quickly to sweep these individuals into their rightful places, be they the dust bin of history or prison.

Note that Pell applied for leave to return to Australia, should his doctors permit such travel. We have yet to learn the nature of his illness. (Australians are suspicious of these claims as we have a history of notorious con artists claiming ill health so they can avoid court appearances and penalties).

He's been granted leave by his boss. We still don't know if he's 'well enough to travel'.

Gotcaughtitis.

I had to look up the reference but I was fascinated by his plan to build the Titanic II.

I chose this account, because Tetsu Aki is the Paradise Point Japanese restaurant, close to his home - in fact, around the corner from our old place (we recently moved just up the road a bit). Clive lives on 'millionaire's island', Sovereign Island. (Note, he's our ultra-wealthy, failed business who went into popular politics at federal level, then was discovered to be, in fact, broke so couldn't run for PM after all...after promising Turnbull [who is seriously wealthy anyway, and it's safely stowed in the Caymans] that he'd oust him)

And then magically....Lo, he was well enough to travel!!

Bone spurs.

I'm surprised the cardinal in charge of the Byzantine Vatican finances, the one who is supposedly cleaning everything up, may not have the stamina to travel. A physical hindrance wasn't apparent when seen walking around in the Vatican.

Maybe he can now join Cardinal Law in his rest home, the Palace of the Chancellery.

Bone spurs?? That's what prevented his previous return to answer to the Royal Commission??

Everyone's speculating about cardiac problems, or other dire issues - possible terminal illness, à la Skase - and all he's got are bone spurs! He could sail here in a few weeks if flight is so incredibly uncomfortable.

Edited to add: BBC said in February it was a heart condition...

Is it too early to refer to mtierney's silence on this issue as "deafening"?

cheese someone's just explained the bone spurs reference...

Vaatican police, alerted to strange goings-on at an apartment in the city-state, stumbled upon a drug-fueled gay sex party in full swing and arrested one of the occupants, said to be an aide to a top adviser of Pope Francis

The bust, which happened in late June, was first reported by the Italian daily newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano.

According to media, the apartment was owned by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the office that processes and evaluates all cases of priests accused of raping or molesting minors. Days later Pope Francis removed the prefect who headed the congregation, although it was not known if it was due to the orgy.

Vatican City cops were called in after neighbors complained of “constant coming and going” from the apartment and other unusual behavior.

The arrested man, not named in media, was a secretary of Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio who is president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, which interprets laws for the Church.

....

Damning facts on the handling of the pedophilia enablers in the church:

Until now, Francis stood by Cardinal Pell, the Vatican treasurer, even after the cardinal admitted to a special Australian investigation last year that the church had made “enormous mistakes” in responding to the scandal while he was a ranking archbishop. But the cardinal denied any memory of priests who were abusers, or of covering up their criminal behavior, as critics charged. Some priests convicted of crimes, however, testified that Cardinal Pell did know of their activity.

But while more than 800 rogue priests have been defrocked and some sent to prison, diocesan and parish superiors have largely been spared sanctions and discipline. This, despite their having abetted violators by rotating them to new parishes and concealing serial child abuse from civil authorities.

Last year, Francis denounced “the sin of covering up and denial.” He had promised reform in 2015, including the creation of a tribunal to try accused bishops, but last year he backed away from the promise under reported pressure by church officials in Rome.

Catholic Whistleblowers, a group of priests, nuns and other advocates for victims of abuse, said it had sent the Vatican documentation on three particularly egregious prelates among dozens under suspicion, and heard nothing back.

As much as we all would hope, there is no instant fix for something decades in the making -- good news is that they are working on it.

well, Pell's made it to Australia...

here's the Guardian on Baby Charlie:

I'm a little confused, though. Won't he be ineligible for health care support under your proposed Act? And even if he's made a citizen, what of his parents? And how does that fit with all the other travel/immigration issues currently being debated? (He's certainly going to be a drain on the public purse)
