Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall mtierney ever citing what Jesus said or did (or likely would say or do) about most of the issues that have been mentioned. If we are going to talk about Christians and Christianity, might do well not to forget his views on these subjects.
I imagine Christ would be surprised and disappointed by how little his views have to do with modern Christianity. When was the last time you saw a Christian who had either literally or metaphorically given someone the shirt off their backs? Any christian who tried to adopt Christ's socialist principles would be in danger of being run down by the motorcade of rich men driving through the eye of the needle.
This is a big part of what makes Pope Francis so inspiring and the rest of Christendom (the Catholic Church included) so disappointing to those who would find common ground with Christ.

How cool is this Pope? I haven't listened to the talk yet but I am looking forward to it. In a time when we are so devoid of moral leadership, Francis has been a wonderful, if utterly unexpected, surprise.
Pope Francis speaks out in Egypt...
Pope brings respectful voice to Egypt
One wonders how followers of President Tweet or Marine Le Pew would react if an islamic leader of similar stature were to give this sort of address in their countries.
That said, props to the Pope who apparently has been forgoing the armored Popemobile for his Fiat. That man has cajones to match his convictions.

Pope offers the disabled an opportunity -- one that is mostly inaccessible for handicapped folks in US as far as I know.
Turns out that all that money Pope Ratzinger was spending on jeweled slippers can be put to better use. May Pope Francis enjoy a very long and fruitful life.

interesting account of 29 U.S.presidents' visits to the Vatican...
Before the November election an interviewer asked the Pope what he thought of Donald Trump. Part of His Holiness' response included a pretty funny imitation of that thing Trump does with his lips. I hope he does it again for the president.

Given how much death, destruction and pain religion has brought to the Middle East I wonder why people seek to double down on it. If I lived in that hell hole, my fondest dream would be of the broadest secularism imaginable. That would be a dream to which one might dedicate their life.

I was really referring to the issues being discussed more than the manner of discussion.
The latter is not irrelevant, but I would call that a draw.
