The Rose Garden and White House happenings: Listening to voters’ concerns

Some 108,000 Americans died from fentanyl overdoses last year

In case you're not sure where your first sentence went wrong here, this is from your PBS link (emphasis added by me):

"New CDC data released Wednesday indicates that deaths from drug overdoses in the U.S. reached a record-high last year. More than 107,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2021, the highest annual death toll ever recorded. Deaths from fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine rose sharply."

With such a porous border, no wonder drug cartels are taking advantage of the human diaspora at our southern border. The very same border our immigration czar recently called  closed — Harris (a heart beat away from the Oval Office) is who, exactly, in the big picture? She has said (after translation) that if Biden runs, so will she. Biden turns 80 in November.

For full disclosure, and to avoid accusations that I am anti-old folks, I have a decade on Biden, as my regular correspondents here already know.

and you’re a heartbeat away from a trumpenstein rally…

I will never understand why the number of arrests is turned into the porous border argument.

On the other hand, maybe I do understand it.  It's just anti-Kamala Harris ranting.

When Trump ran, so did Pence.

Politico has a historical review of Hitler’s plan to rid Europe of Jewish people, and what our government knew —and when they knew it.

so why are you so adamantly opposed to the U.S. taking in refugees in 2022?

Meanwhile back to 2024 candidates, here is Gavin Newsom bio fodder, straight out of Hollywood…

The NR story explains to some degree why Biden most often recalls his grandfather, rather than his father.

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/bidens-student-loan-cancelation-order-costs-400-billion-cbo-calculates/

I ask this question, seriously, because I don’t think the usual answer “taxpayers” will be correct. Ever since Biden introduce his plans for America a few months ago our language has changed. Millions used to be used to describe a great deal of money. Nowadays, the word “billion” is heard in routine spending plans.

We are currently sending billions of dollars worth of aid to Ukraine — efforts overwhelmingly  supported by Americans watching as Putin ravages Ukraine,

The link above speaks in terms of 400 billion for student loan relief.

. Our immigration issues are overwhelming us — have you noticed the arriving migrants are better dressed  of late? Many have traveled by plane to Mexico from Central and South America. Two million+ people have entered this country illegally in the past two years alone.

Where will these billions of dollars come from as we face inflation and recession here at home? It’s a serious question.

“CBO’s estimates are highly uncertain. The most uncertain components are the projections of how much borrowers would repay if the executive action canceling debt had not been undertaken and how much they will repay under that executive action. Those projections depend in part on future economic conditions and on how the terms of loans might be modified in the future. CBO will incorporate updated information about those factors in its baseline projections early next year.”

So on the one hand, mtierney's worried about the country being able to afford things. On the other hand, she notes millions of people arriving ready, willing, and able to get to work. Hmm, seems like there might be a solution somewhere?

The 400 billion number is also over 30 years. So it’s 13 billion a year. And it’s entirely dependent on 100% of qualifying students applying for it.

there are 330 million people in the U.S.  In that context a billion isn't that big of a number.

idiocy.

most of these people are seeking asylum from current hellholes like Venezuela.

They are therefore not illegal. Regardless of what Fox and Friends tells you.

And who is being overwhelmed exactly? You?

And horror of horrors - they might be well dressed!

Let’s see how many “illegals” will be arriving from the hell hole that is Russia…she won’t be overly worried them…

This should just be pinned to the thread. Whenever mt begins talking about immigration:

JSYK, I already posted Ml1’s link on this thread on Sept 23rd.

I believe that the quote “to forget history is to relive it” should be “pinned”  for sure.

But you never answered his question. Why are you so opposed to admitting asylum seekers? The attitude toward immigrants you express in this thread is precisely the same that turned Jewish refugees away. There's a glaring inconsistency in your position here that you refuse to even attempt to explain.

Even with this man https://www.fdrlibrary.org/morgenthau as a WH confidante, Hitler’s planned extermination of the Jewish people was underway in Europe.

If only the internet was around back in the day! Truths and untruths would have spread with the blink of an eye.

There were many decisions made in WW II that would make the Internet explode - some for understandable reasons, some not.  It is also that case that our shameful record particularly in regard to Black Americans and FDR's need for support of the Southern racists Democrats made it somewhat complicated to respond to Germany's treatment of Jews - treatment that was clear to anybody with eyes from 1933 onwards.

But since you are all in a tizzy over immigration, I am sure you would have approved of turning away European Jews.

If "the internet as around back in the day", there would be a chorus of "America First" pundits (probably at least one network) saying that the Holocaust was "fake news".

You still aren't answering the question. Why are you, today, opposed to admitting asylum seekers?

I didn't post the link -- you did! I was simply replying to your post. And you never did answer me.

Why are you so adamantly opposed to the U.S. taking in asylum seekers in 2022? The people you keep on calling "illegals" (notably you don't refer to them as persons or people) are in the U.S. LEGALLY. They have applied for refugee status. The folks flown to Martha's Vineyard have scheduled court dates -- they are following a completely LEGAL process.

for god's sake, it turns my stomach to see and hear the bigoted arguments against immigration (especially LEGAL immigration) that come from descendants of Irish immigrants.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

It is not I who should be embarrassed

Both of the two posters here have  slandered, demeaned and dissed me throughout this post. How come it is OK for them to throw around allegations that imply bigotry, racism, and lies?

OK - do you support migrants who want entry to the U.S. based on U.S. laws?

it's your own comments that imply bigotry, and racism. And the lies aren't even implied. They're overt.

yes. it’s called “legal’ entry.

mtierney said:

some immigrants are also given refugee status. I’m sure we will be getting quite a few from Ukraine. Refugee status is legal.
