Man, harsh words coming off 4 years of your guy in office. It's almost like you acknowledge Trump sucked.

nah, it's the Dems fault for distracting the Donald with a fake impeachment.

I believe politics became a bad word back in 2016 when Hillary defined American conservatives as  a basket of deplorables. It was a humongous basket — 74 million voters! Some words become itched in stone in perpetuity.

You're repeating the fabricated version of what Hillary Clinton actually said.

In other words, your post is an example of what you're claiming to deplore.  Don't berate people who point that out - go read the actual facts.

[Edited to add] In case navigating the Internets is too difficult for anyone, here it is:

You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.

But the other basket — and I know this because I see friends from all over America here; I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas, as well as, you know, New York and California — but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.

Hillary Clinton’s basket of deplorables, explained - Vox

If you want to say that half of Trump's supporters aren't "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, etc.", then that can be a discussion about facts.  But don't say that she shouldn't have used the word "deplorable" to describe the "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic" etc.

and the past four years proved her right.  There's no doubt a portion of the Trump base was beyond deplorable.

The opposite. You say one thing when a Republican does it, the opposite when a Democrat does. Extreme partisanship is the only principle you consistently hold to.

Not true. But what I believe happened is a 24 hour, competitive media which had to be fed constantly, the smallest item had to fill a news hole. We get news on our phones, remember restaurants, with large screen surrounding you? Anyone with a social media account can fabricate stories to keep their standing. So, along with a hungry media, there are hoards of consumers with an insatiable appetite for scandal.

Also infecting political behavior and discourse was 2020! Add pandemic panic to political panic in a year when we watched each day for numbers of the dead, and numbers of those sick.

I believe politics became a bad word back in 2016 when Hillary defined American conservatives as  a basket of deplorables. It was a humongous basket — 74 million voters! Some words become itched in stone in perpetuity.

How to fix a broken society, a crushed economy, a decimated educational system, a political system at war with itself, etc.?

74 million people voted for Trump, but you flatter yourself by assuming you're representative of all of them. How many would have voted for Trump if they'd know how he'd behave after his loss? How many if they'd known he would incite a crowd to literally attack democracy? Not all of them are like you, defending the indefensible, crying crocodile tears over a political system "at war with itself" when yourself support that war.

You've got less company in that basket than you think.

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the irony of someone constantly posting links to the federalist and epoch times decrying fabricated stories and "a hungry ... with an insatiable appetite for scandal"?

I have to say in context when you think of the size of a basket in relation to everything around said basket, the proportion comparison could be pretty spot on - it's all up to personal interpretation.

It was jumped on because they had little TO jump on. Trump succeeded by repetition of the silly comment and his followers - (who already hated Hillary with a passion for not real reason) lapped it up.

Trump on the other hand had dozens of "basket of deplorables" like comments - it was impossible to agree on only one to pin his awfulness on.

Same premise goes to his lies - he ended up with over 20,000 lies or misleading claims.  Think of how many Obama had - you'll probably only think of 1 - if you like you doctor you can keep . .  Where in the reality this lie wasn't as horrendous if you think about it.  Currently, the same issue happens when you move to a new company and get a different health care plan.

I would say Donny's worse lies were about the pandemic - rounding the corner - go away by spring - cases will go down to zero.  Even with this group of lies - it's hard to pin it down to one.  Looks at how many times he said it would go away:

 Not true.

Oh, but this is so easy to show.

I think "a practiced legislative craftsman" is exactly who I would trust
to oversee what the house and senate might do and, as executive, sign
the bills.

Now where in Obama's past do we find similar
characteristics and experience as cited by Brooks? I think Obama's
long-standing wish to be president may be fulfilled in the future, but
not in the middle of economic meltdown and terrorism. Timing is
everything.

Then eight years later, you vote for Trump who had even less experience than Obama. And, funnily, I don't recall you being impressed with Biden's roles as a "a practiced legislative craftsman".

Or how about this?

Blumenthal was an operative not vetted by our government and working as a personal friend of HRC. She was our appointed SOS, not him He apparently fell out of favor in Washington a few years back so he wasn't popular in some political circles. That he was a businessman financiall tied to foreign investments is worrisome.

Shall we talk about Giuliani running around talking to Ukrainian oligarchs? And, uh, businessmen with financial ties to foreign investments...hello!

I mean, seriously, throw a dart at your posting history and you can't avoid falling all over examples like this.

I'm not willing to appreciate anything about the poster you are referring to, but I'd like to point out that elsewhere it created this thread:

Couple of comments:

What a great show last night. Can't imagine how they put that thing (the live parts) together. Would be nice to see that kind of thing every time a dem gets elected POTUS. Enough with the elaborate balls. Let us all enjoy the evening. Sorry mtierney, but events like this need to be dems only. Imagine spending 90-minutes with Scott Baio, Kid Rock, MyPillowGuy, etc.

Also, praying that any GOPer who mentions wanting to lower the debt/deficit will spontaneously combust and then rot in hell.

She didn't say that about conservatives. You talk about people making things up and 24 hour media using those things to fill a hole, and here you are after 5 years of being told what she actually said still spouting that lie, even with evidence (culminating on January 6th) that what she *did* say turned out to be true.

And, yet again you spout the myth that Trump and his supporters are conservative, when they're anything but.

I like this part

"I believe politics became a bad word back in 2016"

and blaming it on Hillary to boot.

Because before that, everyone loved politics and politicians, right?

This is so remarkably off the rails...

Sheesh, HRC-as-villain never gets old. She should be in one of those Marvel movies. What BHO was to white backlash, HRC was to misogyny.

Clips from her ‘16 debates qualify her as a fcuking Oracle. She called it all.

The Oval office is being redone.

The military flags with the battle streamers Trump had surrounding his Oval office are gone. I'm sure some will decry their removal as unpatriotic. It should be remembered that real military heroes like Eisenhower and Kennedy did not surround themselves with military regalia. We only see that with our faux warrior, Trump, who valiantly fought the NYC venereal disease war of the 70's. Is there a battle streamer for that?

President Biden is rid of Trump's chair. Did it belong to Trump or is it government property? If its government's then I suggest that it be burned. If I were religious I would first request an exorcism. Heaven knows what evil spirits could be released at a burning. Probably legions worth.

Anyway, well done, Mr. President Biden.

James Fallows noted that too. He, rightly, calls Trump out as an ongoing example of the chickenhawk pattern:

"But with some exceptions, presidents have largely kept the battle flags out of the Oval Office. Their decisions even follow a Chickenhawk-style pattern: The more closely a president has been involved with the military, the less likely he is to make a military-flag display."

It's nice to have a man and a woman in the Whitehouse confident enough in themselves that they don't feel the need for the ostentatious displays of overcompensating we've been subject to for the last four years.

Will one of you guys get a message off to Biden, informing him he should not cough into his hand, but into his elbow? Especially unsafe just before signing numerous bills.

Now that Trump is out of office, his fans are now more fastidious about the president's hygiene than Adrian Monk.

Trump was a bold leader who feared no virus.  Forget about masks, he wouldn't even wear a condom when he was cheating on his wife with multiple porn stars.  Mtierney's hero.....

I'm watching the WH press briefing.

I can't tell you how comforting it is to listen to these folks without feeling that every word was not meant to obfuscate, deflect and in general b.s.

Fauci just said even he felt liberated.

Fauci unleashed!

The Democratic lineup in 2024 — Bernie doesn’t give up!

Those guys look like they would be staunch opponents of tax cuts for billionaires.  They'd probably support health care for all as well.

Bernie's kinds of folks.
