Trump maintains a hold on the GOP

Stefanik is officially in.

Asked if she believed Mr. Trump was the leader of the Republican Party, Ms. Stefanik said: “I believe that voters determine the leader of the Republican Party, and President Trump is the leader that they look to. I support President Trump, voters support President Trump; he is an important voice in our Republican Party.”

RIP RINOS, you're time is almost up, unless you bow to the Dear Leader, Drumpf.  Let's keep working on the recounts!

I was wrong about an awful lot of things leading up to the 2020 election, so what do I know?  But my gut is telling me that the one thing the GOP can do to keep Democratic voters enthusiasm sky-high for the midterm election next year is to force all its House and Senate candidates to be all-in vocal Trumpers.

Right, and the media will make sure to pin down all GOP candidates on whether they support Trump.

Okay, so it may not be a perfect plan.

I think you're right.  I guess the main tactic (after the Cyber Ninjas overturn the election) will be for Trump and the GOP to remove Democrat nominees off the ballot completely.  Then they can give their billionaire base another tax cut,

Amazing that Trump still has so much pull, even after losing. I guess the GOP's strategy to win back the WH is (1) overturn the 2020 election; if that fails, (2) pray the Democrats screw something up royally between now and 2024.

Or, more likely, (3) just lie about what's happening and dishonestly blame Biden and the Democrats.  This week's example:

Conservatives seize on gas crunch to blame Biden, stir base (apnews.com)

A graphic calling the East Coast fuel supply crunch “Biden’s Gas Crisis.” A tweet speculating that gas stations running dry was an “INSIDE JOB.” A meme depicting the president and vice president cheering about the “Green New Deal” in front of a snaking line at a fuel station.

These and thousands of other social media posts along with conservative websites and commentators this week misleadingly painted President Joe Biden and his administration as catalysts of chaos — who not only mishandled the temporary shutdown of the nation’s largest fuel pipeline on Friday — but engineered it.

They can do that but I don't see how that would work. Trump lost and his approval rating tanked post-election. GOP can lie as much as they want and that will fire up their base but they need to win back voters who Trump alienated, and a strategy of lying will not accomplish that.

I don't think there's any factual basis for that assumption.

So (I think) you're saying a strategy of lying will be effective. What is your factual basis for that assumption?

Effective in winning over a majority of Americans? No. Effective in discouraging enough people to vote so that, in combination with voter suppression laws and extreme gerrymandering they can still win enough votes in a handful of places to win the electoral college despite alienating most Americans? Too likely for comfort.

Maybe. You never know. So much can/will change between now and the next election. But if I had to bet , as  crazy as it sounds right now, I'd bet that the GOP nominee in 2024 will be from the moderate wing of the party.

My fear is that, by 2024, Marjorie Taylor Greene will be the moderate wing of the GOP.

Exactly.  In addition to what's mentioned above, Trump didn't win in 2016 merely because he attracted voters from the Democrats. He won because too many people "sat out" the election, or voted for a third party.

Formerly of the moderate wing of the GOP, Rep. Elise Stefanik with her new job.

The big question is . . . if Trump wasn't the face of the GOP - then who on earth would be?

I suppose it depends how many Republican candidates need to fend off actual or anticipated primary opponents from the Trumpist wing. The Democratic candidates may have an awful lot of Trumpy video of their opponents to use in ads.

Did someone say that a strategy of lying won't help the GOP?

That's the only strategy they've had for many, many years now.

 seriously.

What's the "factual basis" for saying Republicans will lie about Democrats might be the easiest question to answer that we've seen here in many a day. What's the factual basis? How about looking at Lyin' Ted Cruz's Twitter feed? Or the right wing political cartoons mtierney posts. It's nothing BUT lies. Calling Democrats "communists." Is there a bigger lie than that?  Death panel? Democrats want illegal immigrants to vote?

I could go on for hours.
