Pebble mine execs brag of cozy govt relationships on recorded Zoom call

While we all kind of know that businesses cozy up to politicians... a recorded zoom call shows executives seeking to develop Pebble Mine in Alaska bragging about how many hookups they have with government institutions, and how they plan to disregard all the limitations and environmental controls they've submitted in their plans.

Anytime anyone hints that businesses can be trusted, or won't do bad things because people would be mad at them, or can self-regulate/monitor/be self-accountable, this recording should be pulled out.

History has shown us over and over again that corporations will NOT self-regulate properly. Anyone that thinks they will or can is a fool.

How does Thiessen still have a job?

The group, called the Environmental Investigation Agency, released over an hour of tapes Monday. On them, Collier and Northern Dynasty CEO Ron Thiessen spoke of their plans to operate the mine for 180 years longer than the 20 year plan proposed. They also said Sens. Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski would not do anything to prevent it from going forward, despite their recent statements that the mine should not receive a federal permit.
