FYI: NJ Primary Elections rescheduled to July 7

https://covid19.nj.gov/search.html?query=elections

The primary election originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 2 has been rescheduled and will now be held on Tuesday, July 7. This includes primaries for President, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, the 25th District of the New Jersey Legislature, and county and municipal elections, as well as county committee elections.

This will primarily be a vote-by-mail election, however the State will ensure that a limited number of in-person polling places each county will be open to ensure that everyone can exercise their right to vote.

All registered Democratic and Republican voters will automatically receive a postage-paid vote-by-mail ballot. All unaffiliated and inactive voters will automatically receive a postage-paid vote-by-mail ballot application.

In addition to the United States Postal Service, the State will require counties to distribute secure drop-boxes for voters to turn in their completed ballots.

While many voters have seamlessly transitioned to voting by mail, there are other voters who prefer to cast their ballot in person, in addition to voters with disabilities who cannot fill out a vote-by-mail ballot.

For in-person voting, we plan to require at least one polling location to be opened in each municipality. Social distancing protocols will be enforced within these polling locations, including the sanitizing of touch-screen voting machines between voters.

As we expect a much greater than usual vote-by-mail turnout, the deadline by which votes must be received by a county Board of Elections to be counted as valid will be extended from 48 hours after polls close to seven days after polls close.

For more information, visit the New Jersey Division of Elections.

One upshot -- if you haven't registered yet, you have some extra time -- until Jun 16

If you want to vote by mail: https://nj.gov/state/elections/vote-by-mail.shtml

My wife and I just received our vote-by-mail ballots. I'm scratching my head because I don't remember my wife requesting one.

Sanders is still on the ballot. I will be interested to see how he fares. I have a feeling this NJ primary will be very low turnout. Can he still earn delegates at this point? Would that give him any extra sway at the convention?

I'm not sure when it was decided, but everyone gets a mail-in ballot for the primary.

Everyone who can vote received a vote- by- mail ballot today. Might as well fill it out and mail it now.

What do you do if you don't receive one?

We haven't received ours yet, but I was at my Mom's in Bergen County and saw hers.  I didn't know everyone was just getting one automatically.

Anyway, we had a conversation about Cory Booker and Larry Hamm.

Fill out the online application I guess.  What's your opinion of the reliability of mail delivery in South Orange?

I'm not sure I'm ready to choose between Biden and Sanders.  Does anyone have any opinions on the question?

I live in Maplewood. I work in South Orange. Not much difference.

I couldn't decide so I wrote your name in.

Give it a day or two. I got an email from a political action group that I belonged to explaining this would happen. Mine came today.

Read your ballot and the instructions carefully. It can be confusing. For example there are a number of candidates for Freeholder at Large and it looks like a candidate on one line is running against the candidate above or below him/her on the other line. But the fine print says you can vote for any 4.

In an anomaly  there is a slate of "Uncommitted" Delegates to the Dem National Convention, but I know one of the people listed and she does not even know the others and is not sure how her name got on the ballot. In fact she and I submitted certain papers together, were told we did not qualify for technical reasons but her name is there and mine is not?

Their probably will not be a physical Convention but if you are so inclined you can vote for Sanders and his slate of Delegates, who if chosen could help move the Party in a more "Progressive" direction.

As Morganna states you can also write in a choice.

If anyone knows:

If you mark your vote for one of the candidates, but then cross off the name of the other until it can't be read and then write "No ******' way" next to it, would your vote for that first candidate still be counted?

Asking for a friend ...

No. But your friend would be automatically registered for a Twitter account.

if your friend does that in November, if there's a recount, a GOP observer would declare the voter's intent wasn't clear.

Hey only a couple of days left to mail your ballot if you haven't already. I plan to make sure mine is mailed from a post office by tomorrow. Ordinarily I am happy to drop mail in a regular blue post box but not this item.
