Springfield DMV

My wife has to renew her driver's license in person. Has anybody had recent experience at the Springfield DMV and if so, what's the procedure?

Thanks.

I’m not sure they do licenses there. Check the MVC Website.
I also have to renew in person.

The waiting line extended to Morris Avenue on Tuesday at 10:30.

If the line extended from the front door of the DMV building (formerly the office of Dr. Robbins, who also served as NJ BME President) just to Morris Ave., that’s not too bad. Unless the customers were packed together like sardines.

This DMV location certainly did license renewals pre 2/20.

Every time I drive past the area on Morris Ave  around 8.15am, there's a line which extends from Center St to Morris Avenue, and then back down Mountain Avenue. People bring chairs and umbrellas.

I'm in a similar position where I need to renew in person, and I'm really not looking forward to it.

My wife isn't driving much these days. Hopefully she won't get stopped and if she does, the officer will be understanding. The only ticket she ever got was in Springfield with one of the red light cameras which was subsequently ruled illegal, but we paid the ticket.

Springfield doesn’t process licenses.

Hi there! Here to nitpick.

NJ has an MVC. Not a DMV.

Carry on.

The DMV is one area NJ could help in a couple of ways. Set up some temporary offices and hire some temp workers to clear the backlog. It would give short term employment to some people who need help right now and help the people who don't have a full day to spend at the DMV.

I don't know how possible this would be. You would be trying to set up stations and connect them with a computer system that is so old, the wires are turning to oil.

A system of online reservations would be welcome. Maybe 25% online and the rest, show up at the door.

The MVC head said this wasn't practical because some people might not keep the reservation. So, then fill it with the stand-ins waiting outside.

It’s a nightmare. We bought a car from my parents and had to transfer the title, register etc.

two trips to Springfield (first, too crowded, second, after waiting a few hours was told no power and they wouldn’t open)

Next triP to EO where husband was told the title was written wrong (After waiting hours on line) and he needed to get a form notarized with my moms signature, an hour away. Several trips back and forth (between my parents and EO) and each person disagreed with the previous person’s form.
finally the next morning the person didn’t even look at all the supplemental forms and accepted the first form as written.

Service is horrible and incompetent. I’d never go to EO again, that’s for sure. And parking in Springfield is a nightmare. I’d sooner drive out west.

Agreed. After my husband’s experience, where luckily he had taken a few days off work, I really feel for people for whom English might not be a first language or those who work at times that make spending four hours at the MVC impossible.

 Thanks. I found this online:

eta - She was thinking of going to Eatontown anyway. She'll just have to leave here around 6:00 am. We're familiar with the Eatontown location.

My wife's license expires Aug. 31. It appears that she gets an extension until Dec. 31. I'll try to confirm on Monday.

"Was my expiration date extended?"

"If expiring between June 1 and August 31, they have been extended to December 31."

• All standard driver licenses (including permits)

They've extended license renewal deadlines, check the website. When I registered a car two weeks ago, I went early in the morning, half an hour before it opened. Line was several blocks long, with social distancing. People had lawn chairs, and the DMV gave out #s, similar to deli counter. There's a limit to the numbers they will give for the day. I was done by around 1:00 p.m. -  so be prepared to wait.

Pre-pandemic, I did the Eatontown DMV on two occasions, once for a license and once for an inspection. Both times, so worth it - it felt like it was being run like an actual business. Staff was pleasant and helpful. License renewal - even with a new photo - had me in and out in less than 15 minutes. Inspection was start to finish 7 minutes. I realize those times aren’t happening any time soon, but when they do, I highly recommend Eatontown.

Does anyone have experience with the Randolph location? TIA

Went to that one a couple of years ago - a zoo, and they don’t have enough parking, but somehow still better than the experience in Springfield. At least for me.

For licenses, go to Bayonne. Seriously. I recently went to South Plainfield (all day) and Rahway (line around the building. Went to Bayonne - in and out in about 30 minutes.

Holy Shnikeys.

At 7:20 the line went from in front of the building up Center St to Morris Ave. Then down Morris to Mountain, around the corner and a block down Mountain.

I actually first tried Somerville. I would estimate there were over 200 people waiting at 6:50.

I read mrincredible's posts and I've read stories in nj.com and the situation is insane. People lining up starting at 11:00 pm the night before, people lining-up for ours only to be told it's closed for the day, etc. NJ has to do something to fix the situation. My wife is going to hold off for a while, since she has until Dec. 31. Hopefully things will improve.

REGISTRATIONS AND TITLE: Washington MVC about 40 minutes from here... 78 to 31 to 57.

I arrived there, 10:15 on Wednesday. I was out at 12:05.

I titled and registered a motorcycle for my employer.

There is a 15 minute line to get your ticket to go inside. (That is the same Springfield line seen stretching around 3 blocks). Then you go inside to have your docs checked. Inside clerk asks your text cell phone number and gives you another "pass" number and tells you to go and wait outside. They will text you when to come in.

There is a coffee, soda and hot dog store next to the MVC.

At about 20 minutes later, you get your first text message to start heading back to the door. 10 minutes after that, you get a second message (almost ready). About 1/2 hour later, you get the message to go in.

Inside, its about 15 minutes more and you're done. DO NOT GO IN THE AFTERNOON.

Oh, and the clerks don't act like you should be thankful they took time from their coffee break to handle your business.

FormerlyJerseyJack - My wife plans to go to Eatontown to renew her license, since that is one of the designated places. I'm trying to find out how bad the line is if she gets there at 7:00 am. I will probably make with the trip with her so that we can take turns in the line.  We'll take good books and a beach chair.

If I buy a used car is there a way to register it online?

MVC website lists Eatontown as closing admissions around 11 a.m. Washington usually closes admissions at 2 p.m.

In either case, you may arrive at the location, wait for an hour or two in Eatontown and then the guy calls out, "The lines are now closed." In Washington, the most you will wait for the initial ticket is 1/2 hour. Also the drive to Washington will not have Parkway traffic and tolls to deal with.

Either way, Buena suerte.

EDITED: Sorry, you were looking at license renewal. I am referring to registration and title.

Title transfers must be done in person, although a car dealer should be able to process it for you.  If you're not buying it from a dealer (private sale) you're going to have to go.

Had my car inspected in Randolph on Tuesday, after discovering upon arrival that the Washington inspection station is by appointment only.

Arrived at 3:35pm, was leaving by 4:05pm.  Renewed registration online, so didn't have to go in for that, but observed that there was no waiting line outside the building while I was there.

do you remember how far ahead you got the renewal form, can't renew without the form...and I haven't gotten my yet...I'm due in October...used to be able to inspect 2 months ahead of time, but can't inspect without the registration...i could swear reg form used to come at least 3 months ahead of time..hoping its just delayed because of closures...

just found a link to request an allegedly lost pin...i assume it works for one that got lost in the mail.
