Sports movie favorites? North Dallas Forty is it for me.

(Stop me if I get annoying with these movie threads.)

I just love North Dallas Forty. Seen it a dozen times probably. Nick Nolte is great. Mac Davis as the smarmiest quarterback alive. And that haunting score.

Hoosiers is a close second though. What a good movie.

Someday I'll watch Rudy.

"Every time I call it a game, you call it a business. And every time I call it a business, you call it a game."

Slapshot still stands up today, one of my favorite sport movies.

Field of Dreams. Hands down.

Bull Durham

Cool Runnings (this is the one I've seen a lot; blame it on the kids, but still enjoyable)

The Cutting Edge (old one, haven't seen the new one)

That's funny, because I don't even think of Rocky as a sports film, but of course it is.

"Rocky."

Go figure.

Major League is a good one too.

documentary:

Knuckleball

Friday Night Lights.

And yeah, Rocky...of course. On a different level from mere "sports movies."

Necessary Roughness - A kind of obscure one from the early 90's (for me can also be put in the watch over and over again category since I have it on DVD) with a lot of familiar faces, Scott Bakula, Jason Bateman, Sinbad, Hector Elizondo, Robert Loggia, Larry Miller, Rob Schneider, Kathy Ireland... has a lot of dopey humor

The original Bad News Bears. I thought Moneyball was damn good. Kind of came and went with little fanfare but Goon holds its own with Slapshot in my book. And if Rocky fits, than Raging Bull has to get a nod.

In order of preference:

Bull Durham

Friday Night Lights - series - never saw the movie and hear the series was much better in any event

But to the OP - I only saw North Dallas Forty once but still consider that opening scene with him in the tub re-living the game one of the best openings in a sports movie I've ever seen.

61 (even though I'm a Mets fan and not a Yankees fan)

Field of Dreams

The Sandlot

A League of Their Own

(Edited to say that it's pretty clear what is my favorite sport  grin  )

Yeah, I have to go with Raging Bull too. Though it certainly doesn't fit the classic mode.

As for North Dallas Forty - yes, the opening scene is wonderful. It really sets the tone for the whole movie.

Above The Rim

Love and Basketball

Sunset Park

Blue Chips

I could go on. You already mentioned Hoosiers and the best football movie ever North Dallas Forty

Documentary Division: "Hoop Dreams" and "Super Bowl IV"

"Breaking Away" is pretty good and hard to argue against anything with Jackie Earl Haley.
