So, when there is a mass shooting by a native born American it is politicizing tragedy to mention gun laws but right after the attack in NYC Trump can slam Sen. Schumer for immigration law?

In the meantime, the country the terrorist came from is not on Trump's list of banned Muslim countries from his executive order(s).

What a fool.

I know this has been said thousands of times, but somebody needs to take that man's cellphone away. He has Twitter Tourette's.

Would we have known just how batsiht crazy this guy was were it not for his itchy trigger finger? smirk

people in NY are staying calm and going about their business today.  Trump needs to stop being such a drama queen.

"I am not bothered that the President didn't call. I am bothered by an attempt by anyone to try to politicize this situation. That plays right into the hands of the terrorists. They're trying to disrupt. They're trying to create mayhem. They're trying to divide. The point is to do the opposite. Is to unite, normalcy, proceed as one. So to politicize this event, I think, is wholly counterproductive."

Governor Cuomo

Remember what this asshat said about the London attacks?

"Another attack in London by a loser terrorist. These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive!"

Glad Prime Minister Theresa May and Scotland Yard called him out. Another unhelpful comment from our so-called leader and ally. Notice the Dump uses "sick and demented" when he commented on the home grown domestic terrorist who shot up Las Vegas. I guess he lacks when it comes to vocabulary use.

"He's a sick man, a demented man, lot of problems, I guess. We’re looking into him very, very seriously."

Not one peep from this creep in awhile in how a "demented man" is allowed to buy guns in this country and kill a mass of people. Yet, he has taken steps to roll back some restrictions on gun use and sales put into effect while his predecessor, President Obama was in office.

A true asshat.

I replied to him on Twitter.  I keep hoping he blocks me. It will be a badge of honor.

Forgive my ignorance, but WTF does this have to do with Schumer? That was Ted Kennedy’s bill, and it’s 27 years old. Schumer was just one of many House Judiciary Committee members, but it was passed by House and Senate and signed happily into law by President Bush.

Classic Trump - "Who can I blame? How can I exploit the situation?"

Hillary catches a break this morning...no blame...though she was a Senator from NY...hmmm.

Fox is cooking up something  for dinner time. I tuned into a show with several women, Outnumbered? A realized that I was seriously under dressed so I dug out a pair of spikes. Not sure it worked with the yoga pants and animal rights t shirt.

They were deep in analysis. Or should be. I'm thinking of torturing myself by tuning in to Hannity tonight. "All things will be revealed."

from what I read, Schumer actually was part of an effort to eliminate the program a few years ago.

For some constructive politicizing --- just as it's appropriate to talk about gun control after a mass shooting, it's appropriate to talk about protecting bicyclists and pedestrians from cars now.

Here's a reminder that Vehicle Attacks Are Not Inevitable, and that we can do a lot more to make our cities safer. Bollards to prevent cars from entering bike and walking paths, congestion pricing to reduce car traffic in the center of our cities, and other pedestrian-friendly measure can go a long way toward saving lives.

I don't think it's incorrect to talk policy after some event. In many ways it's the best time to do so. But it should be constructive, i.e. the opposite of what Trump does.

I was kind of surprised that in this day and age that the bike path was apparently unencumbered the whole way down. I would have figured that they would have placed some sort of obstructions in the path that would allow bikes/pedestrians to go through but that couldn't be driven through by a car or truck. You know, every block or so.

Or is that giving in to terrorism too much? Or is it logistically just too hard to do?

The time has come for extreme vetting of people whom wish to rent trucks.

I was surprised to learn of the lack of barriers too. As noted in the article I quoted -- and as no doubt most on this thread recall -- barriers saved lives in a similar incident in Times Square (and, worth noting, the motivation for that incident turned out to note be terrorism -- we spend too much energy worrying about motivations and not enough worrying about keeping people alive IMO).

As it turns out, there already was a bill introduced to add more protective barriers throughout NYC:

Lab Report: Can $50 Million Worth of Bollards Protect New York City?

Responding to Tuesday’s terrorism in Lower Manhattan, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand introduced the “STOP Act” to fund installation of $50 million worth of protective barriers like bollards and planters around the city—a strategy already in use in several cities worldwide to prevent the use of vehicles as weapons of terror. As Time reports, New York congressmen introduced a similar bill earlier this month:

"Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat and Republican Rep. Daniel Donovan, both from New York, introduced their version of the STOP Act on Oct. 12. In response to Tuesday’s terror attack, Rep. Espaillat pushed the bill in a tweet."

...and today at least 15 dead in a mass shooting in a church in rural Texas. As ye sow, so shall ye reap....

The usual, expected trite comment:

Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response.” - Gov Abbott

I've been hearing numbers in the mid 20's. 27?

MSNBC reporting the number to be 27.

The shooter has been id’d, but I won’t even say his name.

This happened in a place filled with thoughts and prayers, time for action on gun control.

Yes, I now see 26 dead as stated on Twitter. Suspect is married, white, 26, marine converted to Islam. War kills in so many ways.

Bollards are hazards to cyclists.

careening trucks are hazardous to everyone.

Anyway, I'm sure these things can be designed in such a way as to make them easy to navigate for a cyclist, and impossible for a vehicle.

eta: now that I know what a bollard is, it seems they'd only be hazardous when going at high speed - which you wouldn't be doing on a pedestrian roadway.

Anyway, it doesn't have to be bollards.

no I don't, but I know there are people more clever than me out there at this kind of thing.

Anyway, what are the odds of hitting a bollard when riding at a reasonable rate of speed. This was a mixed use area - peds and bikes. Bikes shouldn't be riding at top speed here, should they?

Anyway, I'd rather see something along the lines of concrete dividers arranged at angles in such a way as to allow bikes relative ease of access but still able to prevent a vehicle from getting through. Doesn't sound like an insurmountable problem to me. Bollards are kind of a simple minded brute force approach.

Another day.  Another deranged man opens fire upon the innocent with the weaponry of war zones.  Plenty of tweeted prayers to go around.  Plenty of nothing to seriously address the ongoing scourge of America. Unofficial reports are that the suspect was in full combat gear. Among his victims were children, the pastor's daughter, and a pregnant woman.  He posted a pic of an AR-15 on his Facebook page. Many of the injured who managed to survive the last (major) mass shooting in Las Vegas have endured numerous surgeries, face permanent disabilities and catastrophic medical bills.  To say nothing of down-on-your-knees grief beyond words.  Someone once said that the price we pay for love is grief.  We have gone past the point of negative return; too far down range in gun saturation, too lacking in political will.  So until next time.

thedailymail.com:  Texas Church Shooter Kills 26 Including the Pastor's 14-Year-Old-Daughter

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5052163/Up-27-shot-Texas-church-gunman-opens-fire.html?login

The slaughter could have been worse — an armed “Good Samaritan” reportedly chased the shooter out of the building and followed him to a car, he did not get far. Still not known if the shooter killed himself, or had been shot by the churchgoer.

Commentary today by a number of police professionals and pastors suggest churches — big and small — will have to devise security protection and ways to have bags, backpacks, and such left outside the Church proper. This is the world we live in.
