The sign is pointing to magnetic north. It is to prevent motorists from driving off the road and into the estuary. The owl honored the signage and flew off in the proper direction.
I love these photos. Have loved owls since I was a child. Thought I saw one in Queens as a teen and you have reminded me that it was on a warm February day. I've been drawing and painting owls ever since.

I have been wanting a good photo for one of these guys for years. Two or three make their way to N.J. each winter. Usually in reeds or brush and difficult to photograph.
Then this guy end up perched on the traffic sign.
