It may be that the metal clips the hold the sink to the countertop are rusting. Maybe those can be replaced with minimal cost.

I have reoccurring rust that keeps appearing around the kitchen sink. I have removed the old caulk, wiped clean and dry and then applied Red Devil Duraguard silicon acrylic caulk. Also lightly sanded and applied Rustoleum first. Without removing/replacing the sink can anything be done?
It’s a cast iron sink. The rust is coming from the underside of the lip that’s resting on the counter top. The only way to stop this is taking the sink out, clean away the rust. Treat it with a rust inhibitor, get a good rust oleum primer on there. Then put on the liquid porcelain. When it’s dried for 24 hours reinstall the sink. Use pure white silicone around the edges.
I don’t think these heavy cast iron sinks have clips underneath, they’re just so heavy they stay in place.

I've got a similar problem around the drain in my bathtub.
I'm dreading rust starting around the drain in my bathtub. The drain area of the matching bathroom sink rusted badly last year, so I replaced that sink & vanity with a new one (and I'm very happy with it).
However, my google searches on how to fix rust around a drain on a bathtub don't look promising (especially since our tub is turquoise, not white). A new tub may be needed, which likely would require our fully tiled tub area to be renovated. But our tile is still in very good condition. So, while I don't have this tub-drain rust yet, I'm paranoid it will appear soon.
If you find any good fixes or prevention measures, let me know.
Frankly, I was gonna try Jaytee's suggestion in terms of prep and painting.
Thanks all. If the sink requires removal to get rid of the rust from recurring it's probably best to replace as it is over 25 years old. Anyone know what a roughly 25 inch kitchen sink like this would weigh? I would like to try and DIY the job.

They weigh about 80 lbs. roughly about the weight of a sack of cement. It’s a two person operation.
a quick google says that a 25 inch cast iron sink is at least 100 lbs, maybe more.
