Shortages

Dannon fruit on the bottom yogurt missing at Stop and Shop and Shoprite.

A friend told me today Rice Krispies have been missing from shelves since before Christmas, as have Kellogg’s Raisin Bran and a few others that are favorites at her house.

I've been looking for about 2 weeks.....

Maccas in Alice Springs is out of McNuggets! And a KFC has had to close because it can’t get fresh chickens!  tongue rolleye

(A combination of floods, poor road conditions, lack of transport personnel and lack of packing materials for the produce)

Consistently low/out of Fancy Feast cat food at several stores.  Otherwise, "it's always something" - unpredictable but generally brief shortages, stores never seem to be fully stocked.  Still wondering how much is supply and how much is lack of staff.

Wow, unable to get prescription meds is sort of scary.

We get our Fancy Feast via Amazon's subscribe & save, and two months in a row late last year (I think it was November and December), they didn't have it. (We actually had quite the glut of it, so it wasn't a crisis here.) In any case, my January and February orders came as normal -- so I'm taking that as a hopeful sign that this particular shortage is improving.

Trader Joe’s refrigerated produce, 7:30 tonight 1/31/22.

About 1/2 of the store had full stock. The other half had one or two items of a product or none at all.

I don’t see any shortages of Valentine’s Day stuff..,

"At Trader Joe's stores, shoppers over the weekend saw messages attached to empty shelves blaming weather emergencies for delivery delays."

FJJ - Any such messages in the Millburn TJ's?  People stocked-up before the snowfall which contributed to the problem.

(cramer, coincidentally? your link is our local Milwaukee CBS station)

I don't recall seeing any such messages. But I wasn't looking for any..... just in and out.

Has anyone seen Nilla wafers??

I just went to Stop-n-Shop, and the cookie aisle was fairly well stocked, except for Nilla wafers, which was the one thing I was really there to buy. I need to use the bananas and milk I overbought before the storm, and was going to make banana pudding.

Wait... this is deja vu isn't it? Maybe we had this conversation earlier in the thread....

[ETA: We DID discuss this earlier. They now seem to be in-stock at Target.]

dollar tree may have nilla wafers if you want to try their brand...i was at Rt 22 union by the best buy.

i have seen the snack packs of the small size in a few places, don't remember where

The ShopRite in Millburn had Nilla Wafers yesterday.

I found the Nilla wafers at Target. Now hoping the banana pudding turns out well...

the new 110 birthday oreos.....they were supposed to hit shelves jan 31, but they don't seem to be stocked yet....i'm guessing shipping delays

Success!

Trader Joe this morning.  Fully stocked.

The story is actually crazier than that.  In an already tight cream cheese market, a major producer was taken down temporarily by a cyberattack, just as the peak-use holiday season was ramping up, causing disruptions across the supply chain.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/18/business/cream-cheese-cyberattack-schreiber-foods/index.html

At this point, there is plenty of Philly brand cream cheese out there, but they don't seem to have resumed production of the regional TempTee brand, which they now own, and which is missed by many (including my spouse, who doesn't want any other whipped cream cheese in the house).

I have to wonder if it’s as simple as cream cheese became the new toilet paper. People hoarded (as much as you can “hoard” something with a fairly short shelf life). Then they realized they didn’t need to hoard, so it was seen on shelves again. I have not tried to buy any, so I have no first hand experience with the supposed shortage.

Actually, it looks like I was a bit off above.  In late 2021, just as the cream cheese shortage was hitting, Kraft closed a deal to sell a bunch of brands, including Breakstone (Temptee's owner), to the French Groupe Lactalis.  I'm assuming that the cream cheese line was part of the deal, and wonder if Temptee will ever re-emerge, or will be lost to consolidation.

And (before I drop business research for the day), early this month (February), three months after the transaction closed, the family that owns Lactalis fired the CEO, possibly for being too aggressive in his growth strategy...  Temptee may have more problems than just the cream cheese shortage, and I can't find a corporate site for it anywhere..

I can't even figure out which company owns it, or who we would write to signal our desire to see it back on the shelves.  For now, buying brick Philly and refusing to flirt with other whipped cream cheeses...

At a Michaels store yesterday (art/craft supplies, "decor," yarn, fabric...), clerk pointed out the "80% off Christmas" shelves, then said they are still receiving/opening Christmas shipments and will put them on the shelves, immediately 80% off, hoping to make way for spring shipments.  She thought this was the lingering effect of harbor/shipping backups late last year.

eta: i guess this is sort of the opposite of shortages, but seemed related.

TempTee spotted at ShopRite today!  (but not much of it, so it may be getting purchased as quickly as it goes out)

Dollar Tree is selling Christmas items for 1.25..in December Christmas items were $1...

I was making a cheesecake last week and went to ShopRite to get the cream cheese. Philadelphia brand was $3.99 for 8 oz! I have never seen it that expensive. Bowl and Basket (ShopRite's in -house brand) was $1.49. Guess which ones I bought.

I found some TempTee at Ashley's!  grin

No new shortages have been posted here in quite some time.

Even though there is no shortage of shortages.
