Terrorist attack in lower Manhattan

As of right now 5 injured with possible 2 dead.  A van or truck drove down bike path hitting and shooting at people on West Side Highway.

Police are saying possible road rage incident.  Suspect in custody.

FBI is on scene investigating possible terrorist act.

Prayers with these families.

not what is being reported. Road rage dispute resulting in a truck hitting people in bike path. Shots fired were by police trying to gain control.

2 confirmed dead. Suspect in custody and doesn’t seem to be terrorism.

CBS News just reported 6 persons dead.

They are showing pictures of shattered bicycles from the bike path and there are certainly well more than 2 in these pictures.

One of those Home Depot rental trucks, drove on bike path for almost a mile. Right by Stuyvesant High School.

They are now looking at this as a possible terrorist act because of something the suspect they have caught said or did.

CBS just updated it to at least 6 dead and 15 hurt.  Witness said she saw suspect shooting something that did not look like a typical rifle or hand gun.

These poor bicyclists never saw the truck coming at them as he drove from behind them.

Looking more like terrorism as it unfolds.  Truck may have been rented in Jersey City at the Home Depot by the tunnel. And the location is only a few blocks from the World Trade Center.

Makes me sick to my stomach looking at the pictures of the bikes.

MSNBC is showing a video of a man as he allegedly runs from.the truck and moves around on foot with what looks like guns in his hands.

CNN is reporting that they were fakes:

The driver then exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms and was shot by police, according to the NYPD. The individual is in police custody and is being taken to the hospital for treatment, sources at the NYPD said, adding that police are considering terrorism as part of the investigation.

Not far from where I live. I take the path between home and work, but I go north, and the site of the incident is south of where I live.

MSNBC saying 8 dead, 15 injured.

Well, if its a fake, they just showed it again, during the press conference, and said he had two guns.

At the news conference the police commissioner said that the driver had a paint ball gun and a pellet gun.

I just received the following email:

Notification issued on 10/31/17 at 4:50 PM. The New York City Unified Victim Identification System (UVIS) has been activated in response to the vehicle incident near West Street and Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan. If you are concerned about the welfare of someone who may have been affected by the event and are unable to contact them, please call 311. From outside of NYC, you may call 212)%20639-9675" value="+12126399675" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">(212) 639-9675.

The shots people heard were fired from the police and not the terrorist who CBS is reporting is from Tampa, Florida.

so glad Tom Reingold commented.  I was thinking of him since I first heard the news

I'm just glad they finally caught one of these bastards alive.  The fact that he failed at committing suicide is probably as shameful an act as can be attributed to him - at least as far as his soft-headed would-be compatriots believe. (assuming that there is some connection to an existing terrorist group) Catching him alive is probably as big a deterrent to would-be's than anything else.

I wonder if the group would even claim credit, given the ultimate failure?

We'll see.

And also, it appears that the police stopped this guy pretty quickly, all things considered. So good job there.

and a good thing that he didn't have real guns.

Thank you.

I called our son, who lives on the Upper Westside and is an avid cyclist, when this news broke. He reassured me he was OK, but that he had ridden past that spot just two hours earlier  grrr

He had taken the day off because of a medical appointment—

@mtierney, it's a scary thought that he just missed the spot. When I got home last night, then it started to hit me. The attack missed me by a couple of small amounts of time and distance. I'm a bit shaken. But I will carry on as normal. The police are all over. The bike path was empty this morning, and the highway was closed below 14 St or so.

I would guess they’ll be adding the cement barricades to these bike paths so cars can’t fit down them. Glad you are okay, Tom. I thought of you also.

so what do you think of the vile way your man is behaving in response to this attack?

Way to bring the country together, huh?

Way to lower yourself again to the lowest common denominator

so now the POTUS is the "lowest common denominator."  Holy cow, every time you think the office of president has scraped bottom, there's another level below.

poor insult. doesn't even make any sense.

Sure, why criticize Trump when, in the face of a horrible crime and tragic deaths, he makes it about himself and his obsessions?  He had to attack Schumer before doing less important things, like reaching out to the mayor of a city that just suffered an terror attack.

not to mention the accusation against Schumer was a lie.

Sure, but that's sort of a given when talking about something Trump said.

Besides, Schumer was one of a whole bunch of lawmakers who voted for the bill that set up the program, so Trump defenders would say that it's technically not a "lie".  The same folks running around with excuses about Trump's Russia dealings would probably call us "intellectually dishonest" for calling it a lie.

I care about the victims and families.  Not about what some idiot politician says.   Sometimes it's not all about Trump but he is like a bell and many are just Pavlov's dogs
