My favorite classical piano piece. Just the first movement. This tutorial video has a light touch and is at a little slower tempo than usual but I like the mesmerizing note prompts. I do think there are a few mistakes here though. I don't recall the minor seconds in the later segments.
Then Movement #7 of Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil with one of the most haunting alto lines ever. Check out the huge build up to the climax around 1:10-1:30 and then the chorale comes in at the end. Singing the Bass II part for this whole work is an incredible experience with a good group.

hi bikefixed, long time no see.
Life has been very different these past 6 years. I'm getting a huge serving of humble pie working on my MSW at Seton Hall now.
I find Erik Satie's music very soothing. Also that of Le Chevalier St-George (contemporary of Mozart and sometimes called "the Black Mozart" and Ralph Vaughn Williams.
Beethoven's 8th, first movement in particular. Did a 50-minute oral presentation on it in college. (Honorable mention to the piano arrangement by Liszt.)
@drummerboy, I know you have posted that you don't get opera, but here is your chance to expand your horizons.
I'll post favorite arias if you add it to the title. I'm a fan.
Shocked at the number of obvious choices here, including my own. Thought the MOL crowd would surely be as obscure in classical music faves as in everything else.

nah - classical-wise, I stick with the big guns. 1812 Overture is still a favorite of mine. Love those cannons and the ending that takes forever.
Though I will say that my Nyman choice is kind of obscure. I think.
I do love me some Stravinsky and Khachaturian, but it will always be Holst for me.
It might actually have been the first album I ever owned.
I love me some Holst. Big fan of his wind band music too.
The Planets was one of the first albums I ever bought too. This one by Mehta - circa early 70's.
Jupiter is my favorite. I love the middle section based on the English hymn whose name I've forgotten.
Well, I was going to say Schittke's Concerto for Oboe and Harp, but I thought it would be showing off.

Thaxted is the hymn, sometimes called I Vow To Thee, My Country.
This is the copy I had. I must have been 9 when I got it as I was obsessed with space.
Here is a link to a piece by Le Chevalier Saint-Georges:

I knew I was picking an everyman's piece, Bolero, but I had stumbled across that flash mob and figured I it was worth the choice. My alternative would have been another obvious pick but what the hell, here goes. I can handle the heat LOL
Where is @richiekess ? He played the Word Association Music Edition with @The_Soulful_Mr_T and I and had a wealth of musical knowledge.

In high school I played the off stage trumpet part for this. Still one of my most exciting musical experiences. The 4th movement still gives me chills. And Karajan really does it justice here.
