Selling Georg Jensen silver

Does anone have experience/recommendations about selling sterling silver?

We are in the process of closing up my mother's apartment and moving her to FL. She wants to sell her silver : 10 place settings of Georg Jensen sterling flatware + several serving pieces.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

If you want to get an idea about the value of the flatware, I suggest you check completed sales on eBay. That will tell you what people actually pay for it. If you go to a dealer expect perhaps 50% or less of the completed sales price. There seems to be a lot of Jensen flatware sold on eBay. Good luck.

Another source for pricing is replacements, ltd.com.  Again if selling to them, expect 50% or less than what they sell for.

Having spent some time in the Estaste Sales business:  Silver is not what it used to be.

Being from Denmark, I have a sorta sentimental attachment to George Jensen items, but the fact is that it just doesn't sell to 'Millenials'.

I have asked the local Vasa Lodge, whether something like this might be of interest for the 'Import Sale' in November (against a commission on the sales price).  If they are interested, I will let you know.

Any chance it’s Pyramid?

Do you mind sharing the collection?

Thank you so much! That is very helpful. She actually has crystal, as well.

I believe it is called Continental.

It is called "Continental", and the handles are hammered silver. Really beautiful.

Do NOT hit eBay or Replacements for this set, particularly if it’s early, and most definitely if it’s luckily the original 1906 issue.  Serving pieces are a big bonus.

For starters talk to Soren Jensen through jensensilver.com.  He may give you some idea to start with.  I have someone I know well who deals in vintage Jensen flatware and much rarer pieces, but he’s in London and I’m not sure when I’ll be back to see him.

If I didn’t have more sets of sterling than I know what to do with, I’d buy it. The early pieces are gorgeous and this is a rather beautiful set in particular.

Very nice, but it looks like I'll be staying with my vintage Pottery Barn.  smile

Thanks for the info, Chris! My parents bought it in Denmark in 1960. There are maybe six or seven serving pieces, as well as a full set of butter spreaders and (I think) seafood forks.

Edited to add demitasse spoons.

I get the newsletter from The Danish Seamen's Church (in Brooklyn).  I seem to recall, that there have been ads from an individual, who buys & sells Royal Copenhagen porcelain, and presumably also Georg Jensen.

He/she is not advertising in the latest issue, but if you call The DSC (718-875-0042), they might be able to find the details for you.

Not sure what’s up with the quote function.  Sounds like a very nice expanded set... is she looking to do something with it quickly, or can she wait?

There is a gallery maybe up along the Hudson that specializes in Jensen. I have seen the ad in an antiques magazine. And Rago in Lambertville often auctions Jensen. I wonder if either of these possibilities would allow you to consign, and keep more of a % after a sale. Rago has days when you can take items for absolutely free, no obligation evaluations/appraisals. Could be worth the ride. They are experts in what the market would potentially pay. And I know I've seen random vintage Jensen serving pieces in the estate cases at Bauman Jewelers in WO, but I don't know if they deal in entire sets. Good luck!

So I guess it's obvious that it is not a rush!  (so sorry that I haven't been back)

we can definitely wait.
