Salacious, scandalous posts

A deceased family member of mine was accused in a public Facebook group of some disgusting behavior. The poster is barely literate and it was clear in his incoherent ramblings that he was making it up as he was going along. Such as: accusation of disgusting behavior, describing my family member as a "sick puppy", claiming my family member was given lengthy jail time, and saying that was why the business closed. I am beyond livid. We have contacted the admin and the posts have been removed but the damage to my family's reputation is done. The person making the claim is a functioning but mentally deficient individual. I knew him when he was a young boy bc  he is the cousin of my best friend growing up. What recourse do I have with the admin and the accuser?

Let it go.  Keeping the issue alive won't help.

Try not to worry about this too much.  As has happened on MOL, most people recognize when a poster is out of control and don't take those posts seriously.

You've taken steps and the posts have been removed.  As FilmCarp wrote, let it be and it will fade from people's memories.

Deleted. I decided it just not worth it.

Interesting to note that when looking at my homeowner's policy there is an option to insure the person or family against cyber attacks, or " Personal attacks that disrupt your life" under Cyber Protection. This is offered by Chubb.

Do they say what they actually DO in this regard?

I have that coverage as well.  If Bill Gates ever goes after me on MOL, I can retire.

I just renewed my homeowners and I don’t believe I had that option.  Was this regular homeowners or an umbrella policy?

The admin, none, they removed the posts.  there has been legal opinion in the US, that the owner/admin of a website is not legally responsible for what other people post....as long as they remove inappropriate posts upon discovery/request.

If the issue continues, you can look into making a case for harassment....you would have to show it was being done to harass living friends/family.

Unless, you can show financial damage, a civil suit would not go any where.

It was only a few sentences not many details. Just letting their clients know that this is a new offering.  Its probably on their website.
