Sad News, KnitKnack Closing

Sad News! Marie at KnitKnack on Springfield Ave. in Mwood sent out an email saying she has to close the store. Everything in the store is on sale. (40% off today when I was there.) She is also selling the bookshelves and all of the other furniture.

Knitknack's last day open will be June 30th.

She thanks everyone for their support throughout the last year. She has been so supportive of the community, and the place had such a busy, giving vibe every time I was there.

I wonder if there's anyone out there who wants to keep that lovely business going...

really sorry to hear this...

That is sad. I loved that shop when I still lived in the area. But I also loved the yarn shop in Montclair that closed a few years ago, behind Bank of America. It seems it's not easy to make a living off of yarn, which to me is tragic. I would have loved to have my own shop.

I'm sorry to read this, too. I haven't been knitting/crocheting as much lately as I used to, but I did enjoy going into Knitknack when I needed some special yarn - she had a lovely assortment.

We all like the convenience of Amazon, or big stores like B&N or Michael's, but we also want the charm of local stores in our communities. And charm doesn't always pay the rent. Wishing Marie the best in whatever she does next - and I will miss the store.

The last 18 months have been horrible for retail across the country. I don't know a single indepdent shop whose sales aren't down and frighteningly low. I feel for Marie.

You always hate to see someone lose their business, especially if they've worked hard and it was something they truly enjoyed. Hopefully everything works out OK for her.

Sorry to hear that. Hope your stores are doing well!

The worst of it is that usually the really charming places we love are replaced with something more "viable," and usually much, much less appealing. Why is that? I guess it's the rationale that dollar stores and drug stores have something for everyone and prices that are irresistible. Phooey.

A yarn store in upstate NY (Watkins Glen) was facing closure and a bunch of it's customers joined together and bought it. They run it as a kind of co op now. really lovely store.
