RIP Defcon

After a long struggle with Covid, with multiple hospital stays, we got word last night that Defcon (aka John Dilly), lost his valiant battle with the disease.

I just happened to go on Facebook for the first time in months last night, and I saw that he was ill. Didn't realize how ill.

RIP

OMG ! Beyond shocked.

Im still in shock. Sad news indeed.

Didn't know him, but have enjoyed many of his posts over the years.  I can tell from his website that he was a life force.  I am so sorry that he suffered with Covid.  Condolences to his family and friends.

RIP… defcon creator. Larger than life personality.

Used to see him at farm markets. I’m not a hot sauce person myself, but always went up and told him how I enjoyed his MOL posts.

Wow. I only met him a few times, and we definitely butted heads a few times here on MOL, but his politics aside I always liked the guy. RIP, Defcon_Creator.

Oh, that is so sad.

I read Maggie's post earlier today on Facebook. I was going to start a thread and see Tomcat has already started one.  I knew John had contracted COVID but did not realize how badly it had impacted his health.  May John's memory be for a blessing.  If anyone has access to the obit or the funeral arrangements, could you please post them here.

Presente DEFCON Creator and bunny lover!

MOL is full of interesting people.

None more interesting than DefCon!

RIP, Man, Stay Hot!

I am so sorry to read this. He was a larger-than-life presence on MOL and I enjoyed his postings! My sympathy to his parents (I know them from Bee & Thistle) and all of his family. So very sad.

His posts about his beloved Nugget should be in MOL's Hall of Fame, whenever that is created.

I hope they are reunited now.

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

All of us in the Australian contingent are rocked to read this news. DefCon was welcoming, funny, helpful, interesting, a stirrer, cared about his community, with a generous heart and spirit - larger than life, and truly memorable.
Too many memories… may they bring blessings to family and friends.

Yes - here's the Nugget thread - definitely MOL hall of Fame worthy.

RIP John

I’m so sad to hear this - I enjoyed speaking with John, back in the day. And his love for Nugget was precious. I will remember him fondly.

RIP, DefCon. John was a great character and his sauce really was tremendous. Here's a clip of him promoting Zestfest and you can tell how much fun the host is having.

Met the man, myth, and legend a few times at his events. Definitely a personality that will be missed.

Ironically, the other day, I was wondering if DEFCON sauces were still for sale.

RIP -- my thoughts go out to his family.

Very sad....I always enjoyed learning about the latest adventures of Defcon, including when he would drive out to check the latest humongous snowfalls, where others feared to tread.  I'll never forget the first time he gave me one of his sauces to try.  And will think of him each time I use my remaining supply.

So sad. Does anyone know if he was vaccinated?

Facebook page indicates that after being released from the hospital last month for COVID, he decided to hang out at Scotty's and have a beer.

According to a mutual friend, John was not vaccinated.  This should not surprise those who knew him.

I tended bar at Scotty's for a minute and DefCon was a regular at the bar. He was always very entertaining, indeed. He could also be exasperating at times, but at other times, quite warm.

Soulful's description is quite apt. So sad. My heart goes out to Maggie and John's parents.

so sad and such a senseless way to go. I met John a couple of times, and as others have mentioned, he was a friendly and funny in person.  But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that he seemed to enjoy his ability in his words, to "stir the pot" on this message board. Like all of us, he had a few different sides, and IMHO, I think he'd be a little peeved with us if we didn't include mention of his apparent enjoyment of trolling the libs.

I hope if anyone reading this hasn't been vaxxed, that they give serious consideration to getting a jab so they don't end up being memorialized like this.

Oh, he trolled me, and I answered back, but sadly, he isn’t here to hold up his side of the debate, and so I just send my thoughts to the family, with sincere regret at yet another death in our communities.

I have a different perspective of John Dilley because he was a childhood friend of my son Dave’s. I’ll always  remember him showing off a great watch. It told the time in various countries and he was so proud of it. He was probably about ten. Unfortunately, so many people are dying of COVID and it is getting worse. More vaccinations are needed !
