Rewire Old Lighting Fixture

My mother-in-law wants an old lighting fixture (wall sconce) re-wired and repaired.  Electricians don't seem to do that, as it probably doesn't pay well for their time.  I tried Capitol Lighting on route 10 and they don't offer that service any more.

Any idea's on who I could bring it to?  Thanks

I think that I recall reading that One-Stop on Springfield Ave (?) does this.

Summit Lamp Shop on Chatham Road, one block off River. Not inexpensive, by any means, but their work is excellent.

While I get the possible sentimental attachment to an old XYZ (in this case light fixture), it is simply not costefficient for a business to offer a rebuilding/reconditioning service.   While the following example is not a light fixture, it illustrates what is happening in the manufacturing environment:

In 1982, the wholesale price of an automatic nozzle for a gasoline dispenser was if $32 to $38 range.  That nozzle could be taken apart and rebuilt, you could order every single part individually.

10 years later, the wholesale price was in $20 to $25 range.  You could order a couple of replacement sub-assemblies, but you could no longer order individual replacement parts.

When I left that industry in 1997, the wholesale price was in $15-17 range, and you could no longer order any parts.  This low cost 'throw-away' nozzle was assembled with one way screws, to make it impossible to take it apart.

Also, when you are dealing with a UL listed device, if a non-certified technician works on that device, the UL listing is instantly voided.

I've had One-Stop Repairs rewire more lamps and light fixtures than I can remember. Great guy who can fix anything. People send him vintage audio equipment from all over.

Lamp repair is one of their specialties and the most popular request.  No cost though donations are welcome.  This is a volunteer effort held twice a year in Maplewood/South Orange.  Other towns in the area are starting to schedule repair cafes as well.  You bring the light fixture to them and they will fix it. Up to now it has been held at Morrow Church.  Location has changed due to pandemic.

Repair Café. 2-4 pm by appointment only

  • Call (973) 558-0863 or email SOMA2towns@gmail.com with a brief description of what needs to be fixed, and we will give you a time and place to meet your volunteer repair person.

I would second One Stop. I have a Mica Lamp that had "issues"--constantly burning out bulbs and the fixtures would burn out too, even with the proper wattage bulbs. Took it to a lighting professional and it burned out almost immediately. One Stop rewired it and it's doing great six months or so later (pre-pandemic). Although he did tell me: don't rush to bring things to be just to give me business; I have more than I can handle. I hope that's still true.
