Replace lost passport

Are you currently in a foreign country and unable to return?

Are you under indictment by the Japanese government and seeking to reach a country without an extradition treaty?

Are you able to use the internet? https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/lost-stolen.html

Nope. In Ouryard, N.J.  May want to travel some day.

Yes, you simply need to apply again and provide the specially-sized photo and fee. Get a renewal application (different from applying for a passport for the first time) at a post office. I made an appointment at a post office to submit application, photo and fee and received passport by mail about 3 weeks later.

Also, starting this October, a "regular" drivers license cannot be used as ID to get on an airplane for a domestic trip within U.S. and will require the new "Real I.D." which can only be obtained by visiting a state DMV office. However, if you have a valid passport, you can use that instead of the new Real I.D.

I spend the extra $30 USD and get a "passport card" when I apply for a passport - while I don't ever travel by land to Canada or Mexico - it's as good as a passport-book for anything within the USA - Including TSA - and it fits in my wallet.

Second the suggestion to get a passport card.  Additional benefit is that the card has your passport number on it so if you misplace your currently valid passport it is possible to get a replacement without having to apply for a new passport before the old one expires.

You are also supposed to report that old passport was lost.  Typically you send in your existing passport when getting the renewal. I did it recently and it was not difficult.

Report and Replace a Lost or Stolen Passport

You must report the loss or theft of an American passport immediately.

Note: Once you have reported your passport lost or stolen, it is invalidated by the State Department. It cannot be used if it is found.

If you are outside of the U.S., contact your nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate to replace your lost or stolen passport.

reported my lost passport and filled in an application for a new one online, with US Dept of StAte. Following directions online, Brought the application, original birth certificate & drivers license to the post office. I made an appointment near my job, but Short Hills requires no appointment.

I second/third this recommendation.  It's all I ever use for TSA for domestic travel and I've been doing that since before I even heard of the RealID change.  I leave my passport booklet safely at home and my drivers license safely in my wallet.  And when RealID goes into effect, I won't have to worry about an extra trip to DMV.  I'll just wait until the next time I'm due for an in-person drivers license renewal.
