This is going to be a great show!

Tickets are flying! Great show right in your backyard!

A passage from the profile of Buddy Guy in this week’s New Yorker:

There are still some extraordinary musicians around who play and sing the blues with the sort of richness that Guy admires: Robert Cray, Gary Clark, Jr., Bonnie Raitt, Adia Victoria, Keb’ Mo’, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, Shemekia Copeland.

Wish I could attend, but I can't.  She's phenomenal.  She has an extraordinary powerhouse voice, and she's also a great lyricist.  Seeing her at Maplewoodstock was a concert-going high point for me.

Another terrific show, another perplexingly low turnout.   The Rent Party people bring first rate acts at an embarrassingly cheap price for a good cause in a community of supposedly arts loving and knowledgeable people.  You would think the place would be packed.  What's up around here?

Really sorry to hear that it was low turnout. Wasn't able to make it last night unfortunately. The Rent Party shows have been amazing in terms of quality, and of course it's a great cause. Hope they can keep it up, because Rent Party has been a major source of happiness in this community.

It was a great show! We appreciate the kind words and we're gonna keep doing what we do...

Turn out was lower than expected, but I wouldn't say it was low. All in all, it was a good night for Rent Party. Edited to add: I was surprised how early folk started heading out!

Next up: Marshall Crenshaw!

I’ve seen Marshall Crenshaw a few times and I like his recorded work very much.  He’s a rock classicist, I’d say.  His clever original songs have wit and humor and put you in mind of the Beatles and others. His guitar playing is also classic rock guitar playing, so to speak. If you’re not familiar with his music, find his CD called Miracle of Science. Great, great tunes.

Including the covers. Once it’s in your head, good luck getting “2541” out.

"What Do You Dream Of" is another great one on that album.

Saw Marshall last week at City Winery. Such a great collection of songs, and as Mr. T pointed out, a very talented guitarist as well.

One of my great rock & roll memories was seeing Marshall open for the Greg Kihn Band in the Seton Hall cafeteria on the day his first album was released.  All these years later, that is still a classic, and the songs still hold up.  I have an autographed copy of Marshall's handwritten lyric sheet for "There She Goes Again" in my office grin

and this one still holds up:

He's witty too.  At an early 80s show on the pier, when the NYC summer concerts were on a west side pier, I have a distinct memory of him turning to his right to look at the U.S.S. Intrepid and saying "How do you like my boat?"

Shemekiah Copeland was excellent and I really enjoyed Shark Hat as well. I heard the guitarists for Shemekiah Copeland saying the space sounded great as they were packing up their equipment. Thanks for getting all these great artists.
