You may be able to get an amendment to add the car to the policy.
The insurance follows the registered owner and the primary insured and his/her address. When the adult child is added as a driver, the commute and principal garaged residence of the car will be considered in pricing. You should be able to keep the car registered in Nj with endorsements covering the NY driver. Cheaper I imagine too.
I am being told that NJM does not insure in NY. Any other insurers to consider?
It may require an insurance broker licensed in N.Y. state.
We lived in Manhattan and purchased a car there a few years before moving here. Geico was the insurance carrier we went with. They were the only ones that didn't penalize us for having had insurance for the 16 years that we didn't own a car. Despite their silly commercials, they do turn out to be a normal insurance company and are usually reviewed well. We're still with them in NJ.
if not a student and works & lives in NY, what basis would there be to add the person to your plan in NJ? I think the adult needs to apply for his/ her own insurance
In this case Geico....they aren't the cheapest, but they are very easy to work with, responsive, they follow up, their customer service is excellent, and almost everything can be done online easily without ever having to speak to a person.

Bought a used car this weekend for a child living in NYC. Do we need to get insurance from a new carrier, we currently have NJM.
