Recycling Changes

Interesting survey from the town: https://villagegreennj.com/towns/government/survey-maplewood-and-south-orange-want-to-know-your-thoughts-on-recycling/

Does anyone know what changes they are looking to make?  Also curious about understanding how equity factors in since I see that’s one of the goals of the proposed change, whatever that change may be.

Recycling has gotten very expensive for municipalities.  It went from a revenue source several years ago, to a significant cost.

Maplewood and South Orange are working together to see if there is a better solution for how we manage our recycling programs, ultimately they want to save money and increase recycling rates.  Right now, the two towns bid out separately for recycling.

Previous bids in Maplewood clearly have been manipulated by the waste companies. In my opinion, this is the elephant in the room.

There was recently a very informative town hall style meeting about this.  You can probably find it online.  There is a lot going on in the industry and I'm glad that there are active committees working on this.

The town hall meeting was more of a focus group on what participants felt was needed than an information session on what was already planned.  If you have ideas on the subject, the green teams in both towns would love to hear from you.

Well, the presentation at the beginning did an excellent job of laying out the challenges we face.  I think it's good to get informed before offering suggestions.

The equity factor likely refers to the fact that our trash is incinerated in Newark.  Residents who live near the incinerator are complaining of adverse health impacts resulting from living so close to the incinerator.  One of the many aims of the sponsoring groups is to find an alternative to polluting the air in Newark with our trash.
