My 5 year old GE refrigerator/freezer is not cooling any more. Everything was fine last night, but when we woke up this morning everything was getting warm. Temperature on the display screen is showing 50° and 17°. I am guessing it is the compressor, but not sure.
Does anyone have a person/company they would recommend for the repair?
Norman's Appliance Repair 973-564-9050
Tell him that Deputy Director Maplewood DPW (Retired) Dickson referred you...
I just called PSE&G this morning and was able to schedule a appliance repair for tomorrow. Process was very easy.
Thank you both.
Retired? Who authorized that? No papers came across my desk. But that does explain a lot.
Could be compressor. Most likely failure. HOWEVER.... it could be your coils are dirty, although I doubt that would be so abrupt.... it could be, though.
You also will want to check that the vent in the freezer is not being blocked and that the fan is running. The fan can get blocked with ice and will start working again if you let it fully defrost.
All that said.... in my experience (sad, sad experience) you’re better off just getting rid of it if you cannot fix it yourself. Between parts and labor you end up halfway to a brand new, under warranty fridge.... especially if it’s the compressor, which it probably is.
Sorry. Having been through the same thing, I’d suggest Maytag, bought on a credit card that extends your warranty.
I was thinking the same thing about price, but this one was not cheap. It could be a computer malfunction which won't be cheap either. Next fridge will be nice and simple none of the crap we don't use.
Good call Retired Deputy Director. I called Norman's Appliance yesterday and he came out today. He diagnosed the problem in a couple minutes. It was the compressor as I suspected. Norman was upfront with me and told me it might be covered under the warranty,(of course it expired a few months ago) he could have kept his mouth shut about that and just did the job. He said it would be about $900 to repair and probably wasn't worth fixing. He then gave me a name and number of a place where I could get a good deal on a new one.
Best part....he didn't even charge me.
I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for an appliance repair man.

Norman once talked me through a dishwasher repair over the phone. No charge. He also helped us fix the fridge at The Woodland. Again, no charge. Great guy and I love recommending him to folks.
After spending 5 minutes with him you can tell he is a great guy.

He would have been a good member of the DPW Special Unit.
I agree with your assessment of Norman.
He has helped us out on a number of appliance issues. Extremely nice guy, very knowledgeable and I totally trust him.

He would have been the "Special Unit."
Wish I read this yesterday. Came back with groceries, pulled out the freezer drawer and the track came loose. Called a number listed for Jenn Air repair, they showed up late, and what I knew would be only screwing the track on cost me 235. There was no way that I could see the top of the screw or I would have tried to fix it myself.
Luckily I asked before they convinced me to clean the compressor since they were there. Who knows what that would have cost.
The last time someone came a simple fix was blown into replacing a part that didn't cause the leak and the guy left having cut a pipe in the basement and didn't have the part to fix it so he suggested a bucket and he would come back in a day or so.
Well other than chilling champagne, who needs a refrigerator.
We used Yveys Services, a local business, with great success. http://yveysservicesllc.com
I have used Norman's several times in the past and have been very happy with the work. But more recently I called him 3-4 times over a 5 day period and always got voice mail. Left messages but he never called me back. I had to have the work done, so ended up calling Astre. They did good work.
