Recommended Roofers

Please advise on recommended Roofing contractors.  Need hep in finding a reputable company.

We have used Scott's (973-731-0019) for a complete new roof about 15 years ago, as well as occasional repairs, such as when we lost a few shingles during a windstorm.  We've always been very pleased.

Another vote for Scott's.  I wrote a glowing review in Yelp.  I wish every vendor I had is as good as he is.

Ticos did a nice job for us several years ago.

FYI - Many people also like R&G and they may do an excellent job.  However, when they did the roof on one of my neighbors' homes a few years ago, they started work around 7:00am on a Monday holiday morning (perhaps technically legal, but grossly inconsiderate.) So I swore that I would never use them and I now query my contractors for noisy jobs about start times, etc.  Roofing is one of THE noisiest projects and we all understand that is necessary, but that was uncalled for.

Flat roof, asphalt shingle, tile or something else?

Used Scott’s in 2016. Did a great job and were less expensive than R&G.

 Peaked Asphalt Shingles

I had someone come out for an estimate.  Anticipating that i would start work with him on Monday (today), when he left 2 shingles were on the front lawn.  He advised that the shingles were in the gutter and he didn't want them to fly off and hit someone. I advised they were not a problem before he came and now i'm 2 shingles-less and very concerned of further storm damage.  We didn't event start work yet.  I will try the recommendations.

If I read this correctly, the shingles were broken off and not attached to the roof.  They were sitting in the gutter.  They were offering your home no protection and he was merely trying to ensure nobody was hurt by a wind-blown flying shingle.

They *were* a problem before - they were a safety hazard.

He did you a favor.

I called because a shingle was lifted, not separated from the roof.  Apparently when the contractor went up to the roof, there may have been loose shingles (that HE saw), however instead of him putting them back on or securing them until we signed a contract, he removed the loose shingles, left and waited for me to call to confirm a contract.  When i approached him to cover the now exposed plywood, he advised that i need to get someone else to put a tarp.  Very unprofessional.  I was considering to use his services but based on his response, I'm now stuck looking for a handyman to put a tarp before tomorrows anticipated storm.  Really sucks.

If they were not in the gutter then he was wrong to pull them off, but I wouldn’t have expected him to make temporary repairs on his own unless you had mutually agreed that he do so.

If they were in the gutter, my prior answer stands.

Regardless, a couple of loose or missing shingles are not likely to cause you much of an issue, assuming proper underlayment and/or additional layers of roofing.

Hope it works out.

Thanks.  I really appreciate your input.  Just a quick update, his office called and offered to tarp the section that is damaged for $250.00.  At this point I may not have a choice to avoid more leaking from the initial shingle lift.  After that point, I'll let the insurance advise me on next steps.  again, thanks.

I just had estimates done on my roof that ranged from 16k and no gutter replacement to 9300 with gutter replacements. The 9300 estimate was done by one of the contractors mentioned here while 16k was a home depot pro. I dont know what to think at this point. 1 sounds like a rip off and the other 2 good to be true.

Avoid the home Depot crew.  I usually get three estimates for big jobs and throw out the outlier, high or low.

Home Depot gets about 40% of the job. Don’t use Home Depot for roofing. Go with Scott’s. R&G are overpriced. And their workers might throw their personal trash down your chimney.

Just an update.  MINUTES before the storm i was able to get a Maplewood posted roofer to tarp the roof.  Thank God no drama.  All went well.  I will now get estimates on repairing/replacing the roof.  As recommended by many, I have an appointment with Scotts to take a look.  Thanks again all. Much appreciated.
