Recent Experiences at Church's Kitchen

Hi All,

I loved their food, especially the fried chicken (Better than my Grandmother's(even my wife's, which has won awards-Shhh))

I haven't seen many comments since they sold the business.

I understand that they stayed to supervise the new owners. Cool.

Any recent experiences and comments to post?

Many Thanks,

Ron Carter

Sorry to drift but it's in the same neighborhood and I like to support local businesses, big thumbs up for Nunzio's - great bargain and great food (garlic chicken and skirt steak and everything else I've tried there).

We've had Church's twice since it was sold. Once when Judy was still coming in to help them get going, and once since they were left on their own. Both times the food was still excellent. Haven't been in a few months; I should do something about that.

It's still excellent and delicious. I can attest!

Thanks for the comments! I'll miss Judy's Hugs!

Got to get over there myself

I found Nunzio's chicken delicious, but the skirt steak was cooked to within an inch of its life. Horrible!

I found Valley Portuguese on Valley Street in SO much better for everything. I wish there was a similar restaurant where I now live!

Valley Portuguese isn't there anymore...

I'll have to try it.

The skirt steak I had from Nunzio's last weekend was flavorful, tender and pink (ordered it med. rare). Perhaps they are just inconsistent. Love that they cook over real lump coal.

Have ordered and thoroughly enjoyed both. (And the flank steak was also tender and pink, so no concerns there.)

sadly had terrible food from Church's just yesterday. The chicken pieces are not the large ones they used to be, but small...like you'd get at NY fried chicken. But worst of all, chicken was dry and overcooked. Candied yams had too heavy a hand w cloves, and were inedible. It was my first and last visit under new owners. Almost $18 for 8 pieces and the smallest size container of yams. Bye bye.

wow - - our experiences are sooo different! - - my kids (and myself as well) LOVE their chicken tenders still (very high quality chicken) and their philadelphia cheese steaks get a 2 thumbs up from me (although its a little weird that they ask me what i want on it - - since the philly cheese steak is somewhat standard fare, i would think!)...nontheless, when the idea of picking up dinner from their crosses my mind, i jump all over it and dont hesitate to do so

just MY opinion

I've only been once under the new ownership. It was reasonably good but not quite like original. Plus it takes time for new owners to bond with customers and the community, so they will have some disadvantage initially. The original was a wow... must come back... the new fried chicken perhaps needs a bit more flavor/salt just on that one experience and perhaps with some refinements they'll get there. Will give it a shot again.

if you haven't been back since the new folks took over it's prob worth a visit to check it out.

Got Church's fried chicken a couple of days ago. Sorry to say it wasn't nearly as good as former owners

Our neighbors served up 'new' Churches at their Super Bowl party. Everyone, myself included, was very happy with it, but perhaps not quite bowled over [pun semi-intended]. The meat was good quality, good sized and juicy - so definitely no complaints there. It has been a long time since I had the original so I can't say for sure how it compares, but I feel like the OG had more salt/flavor as @yellowgato mentioned.

Nothing against Church's but I stumbled upon this place in Union and took out recently and it was very good:

We had it last week and it was pretty much the same good stuff from the original owners. We were disappointed we couldn't have the mac and cheese but it wasn't ready. They said we could have ordered it the day before. All the other sides were great (mashed potatoes, gravy, collards, rice.) The chicken had just the right spices and was done perfectly.
