Question about Apple geniuses and an iPhone problem

My son gave me his old iPhone. I'd like to upgrade from my older iPhone, which suddenly is refusing to back up to either iCloud (which I was previously, of course, not using) or iTunes (last backup end of August, because I'm stupid like that). My phone must have gotten wind that I'm replacing it, because now it won't even log in to my Apple account. Is it worth trying to find someone who might be able to help me back it up to something, somehow, or should I just assume that if the Applegenius can't do it, it can't be done? Contacts, etc., are saved in the cloud, but I'd lose photos, texts, and I don't know what else because I am not a techie.

The geniuses are good, but they don't know everything. If they can't do it, there might be hope.

You can google to look up error messages. Sometimes the error message is too short to help, or it covers too many possible conditions. But you can usually get the "long" error message if you open the "Console" app on your Mac and hunt around to find the error. Then google that.

Bizarrely, the error messages aren't very helpful, but I will try the console thing after I regroup. Pretty hard/impossible to try to back up to the cloud when I can't even log in to my account on the phone now. Thanks for the advice.
