I believe that mixing galvanized and copper eventually causes corrosion problems. Copper is currently very expensive. Can't comment on comparative plumber prices, but you may have continuing replacement problems if you don't replace all steel with copper at some time. Otherwise you can temporarily cut out leaking steel and replace until copper prices come down some time in the future. (FYI No plumber I know of wants to work with galvanized any more.)
Can you recommend a plumber to give me an estimate on removal of the steel? Just trying to get a ballpark figure..

I had steel and bronze lines removed.
First time it sprung a leak, plumber chArged 1 day rate and fixed stuff needed to get water on again. Then came back when it was more convenient to finish the job and final valves. So 2 days total work for 1 guy.
I use Bruce Lessing out of New Providence, and would recommend him highly.

Had 'my guy' look at a leak in what are probably 80 year old galvanized steel water pipes in my basement, typically lots of copper piping at the ends -he gave me a reasonable quote for removal and replacement with copper, but would appreciate another quote or two just to be sure...
