PLease Help......Water line leak !!!!!

Just been informed by NJAW that I do indeed have a leak on the line on my property....( yes I know I should of had the ins ) but, do I call a regular plumber ?!....and what should I expect the charges to be ???

This happened to us a number of years ago. A water line repair company replaced the line to the street promptly and neatly, and didn't charge nearly as much as we'd feared.  (I know many people swear by the insurance, but after this experience, it never seemed worth it to me.)  Don't panic -- good luck!

PS Sorry I don't recall who did the repair; they were recommended by my regular plumber.

Your best bet is to call a company that can begin with an endocsope of the line. That will cost $250. or so but will give you a better idea of how much you want to spend/gamble on a small repair holding up for years or going for the whole repair.

Cost depends on how far into the line the break is and what is causing the break.

My neighbor used AAA Able when this happened to them.  They were recommended by NJAW.  Neighbor was very pleased with their work.

call hoff bros in union to replace the line. Do a search here for more info.

AAAAble ... that's the one I used.

If your line is new, maybe.  But if like most in town it is 80 years old, or even older, then I wouldn't even bother and would just replace it.  Many of the old lines were made of galvanized steel and are corroding and also filling up with mineral build up.

That was actually a complaint that someone had about having the insurance.  They said that the water company only fixed the broken spot, they didn't replace the entire line, so they had to come out again after another break happened a few years later.

We had ours replaced about 10 years ago or so.  I'm told that there are now companies who can replace the line without digging up the entire front yard, they just dig a hole at the street end of the pipe and somehow manage to get the whole pipe in from there.  Don't ask me how they do it.  Our frontage is small, so the cost difference wouldn't have been that big, but depending on how much line has to go in this might be one method that could save you some money since the excavation does add to the cost.

What tipped you off that you might have a leak in your water line?  The last couple of days I noticed water on the unfinished part of my basement floor...just a couple of small shallow (1/8" - 1/4") puddles where the concrete is depressed.  It's got to be coming from underground.  Ceiling is bone dry, both sump pumps working, nothing coming out of appliances, etc.  Could this be coming from a leak in the water line?

We had water coming from a neighbor's house. The house was vacant after the owner died. Pipes froze and broke. Water came out of that basement and into ours.

I suspect a leak in the water line would show up as lower water pressure in your house. If it was the sewer line, it would smell.

Are you on a hill? Does the water accumulate near the wall or away from it? How long has it been going on?

Also possible an underground spring under your basement.

Thanks, Formerlyjerseyjack!  Based on your info and questions, I have diagnosed an underground spring.  No low pressure, no smell, not near a wall.  Just a tiny bit of water puddled in low areas of the floor.  If it continues or gets worse, I'll have it checked out.  But I saw this thread and thought it might be a water line (since I had no clue what a broken one of those would produce).  Thank you again.

We used Hoff Brothers do replace our line. They do a lot of work in the area and cam hihgly recommended by the Corragios. (We had the insurance and it didn't cover the replacement, only a repair.)
