Notice re 2 weeks of street work with NO PARKING!

We live on Park Road in Maplewood. Just got a notice slipped through the door that milling and paving work is starting on Monday, Sept 18 and expected to run through Friday, Sept 29 for a number of different streets (7 of them) in Maplewood. Mon-Fri, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Driving access from driveways will also be restricted, residents are supposed to move cars daily to any nearby street not impacted!

I think that asking residents not to use their driveways for 10 days is ridiculous, exacerbated by the fact that we are having work done on our driveway that is currently in progress and cannot be suspended.

Can't they narrow it down by street? We already didn't have garbage picked up when the closed the street to raise the manholes - is it going to be two more weeks of the garbage trucks not getting down the street?

I will definitely call both the town and the company (American Asphalt & Milling Services) on Monday, but this is going to cause a lot of problems. Many commuters use our street for parking - they will also be trying to use the nearby streets for parking, which means lots of us will not be able to use our cars for these 10 days - I know street work has to be done, but trying to schedule Ball Place, Ball Terrace, Elmwood, Park Road, Ohio Street, Laurel Avenue, Franklin Avenue, Rutgers Street and Maplewood Avenue in one extended time period is NOT resident-friendly.

ETA: The information above was from the letter delivered today from the paving contractor. One of my neighbors had gotten a listserv alert from Maplewood itself, and that does show specific days for specific streets, so each street is only affected for 2, possibly 3 days. Why I didn't get the alert, too, I don't know since I have signed up for all of them and have gotten them in the past. But, for what it is worth, it isn't as bad as the communication from the contractor made it seem. (And Park Road is supposed to be done on September 20 and 21, so any commuters who usually park there might want to make other plans for those two days)

This happened on my old street when we moved to NJ. Many families wanted the street paved but didn't want the inconvenience of the street being paved - and it is an inconvenience when you have small children, strollers and loads of Costco stock. Also, many were a bit shocked as I was to receive a flyer alerting us to the upcoming project when no mention of this had ever been discussed with those on my street. Also, I don't believe our exodus from driveways was 10 days; maybe a week. In saying that, we all got with the program, parked around corners and notified SOPD of our whereabouts so we wouldn't get ticketed/towed for overnight parking. I walked down my old street recently with my dogs and the street still looks beautifully paved with lovely Belgium blocks. It will be fine. Annoying, but fine.

Will parking regulations on adjoining streets be relaxed, or will residents compete for parking spaces with commuters on the days their streets are closed?  As for the 7:00 a.m. limit on moving cars, that can be a difficult stretch for some.

Got the letter and the emails.  We kicked it off today.  Wasn't aware that my car HAD to be moved, only figured it would be tough if work was going on directly in front or at access points.  Would have been much easier to allow for overnight parking to move the night before to adjacent streets.  But, managed to eke out after waiting ~15 minutes... they were quite cool about it.

I admit I overreacted when I saw the letter from the paving company on Saturday. It read as if every street affected had to follow the no parking/no access for the entire 10 days. The town email (which I didn't get even though I had been previously signed up, but that's a different problem) was much clearer and spelled out that any one street would only be impacted for 2 days (one for milling, one for paving) and gave the days for each street.

If the letter from the contractor had mentioned that fact, I would have been much calmer!

I am concerned, though, since Park Road is a street many train commuters park on and there are no signs up yet advising them that there will be no parking 2 days this week. Usually, the signs go up a bit before the actual no-parking day.

Perhaps call the non-emergency number for the police department to express your concern.  The acting police chief may not be aware of the prior practice in this area.

Called the town Engineering Department and had a good conversation with a gentleman there. He will contact the contractor re notifying police and marking the street for the affected days, which are now a little iffier due to the weather forecast.

I also asked if parking restrictions would be suspended on impacted streets as they are being worked on and it sounds as if they will be, but I have nothing concrete on that matter. If we all call and express our concerns, it will probably carry more weight than just my calling.

I live off Elmwood (on a street not slated for re-paving) and was very surprised to come home this morning and find my street blocked off (ie, no access to my driveway).  No emails, no letters, no notice.  Nada.  Can someone who received notice re: which streets on which days please let me know when the work on Elmwood is supposed to be done?  Thanks.

@oakland2  The notice the town sent out via email shows Elmwood being milled today and paved tomorrow (9/19 and 9/20). There's a caveat at the bottom that dates are subject to change should weather make that necessary.

we had it done as well.  we had to call the police to give our license plate numbers for onstreet parking.
