Imput on New Gas Furnace

Well we have finally accepted the fact that we are going to need a new furnace as our 32 year old Carrier seems to have reached the end. As this is the first time we are replacing a gas forced air furnace I would welcome any input on a replacement furnace. We have a 3 bedroom cape with about 2000 square feet of heated space for the replacement furnace. A later addition has an electric furnace to cover another 300 square feet. Ideally looking to purchase a two stage with an AFUE rating around 80% (the additional cost of a high efficiency is just not in our budget right now). Brands or models you like? Details I should be aware of or questions I should ask when getting an estimate?

The same information I posted in another thread.   Don't accept the first price you get from the salesman. In home sales usually involves "drops" when the sales rep offers a lower price for whatever reason they can think of.

Whatever you replace with, be sure to get IN WRITING, all warranty details, including the labor warranty offered by the installer, which should be in addition to what the manufacturer warranty is.

In particular, get details of coverage relating to the HEAT EXCHANGER, and how many years should pass before it would crack and try to get them to cover labor to replace the heat exchanger if it cracks before, say, 10 years of use.

I would recommend in particular that everyone avoid American Standard, even though they are supposedly the same as Trane.  We installed a Freedom 90 8 years ago and just had to replace it - even though the Manufacturer would send a replacement heat exchanger, the labor to remove the old and reassemble th unit with a new one cost so much that it was smarter to just replace the entire furnace.

Bornstein & Sons did our replacement (highly recommend them, btw) and since have had a few more customers with the same furnace have to replace due to cracked heat exchangers after 8-11 years.

Good luck!

Get an estimate from PSEG, if for no reason other than to have all concerns ( known, and unknown) addressed most accurately.

Before buying the furnace, make sure that you check the furnace brand and its detail. Always buy furnace from an authorized seller. Also, check for the specifications before finalizing a furnace.

I am aware about the furnace service NJ who provides all the furnace services. If you want, you can check about them.
